Patrick Kane's historic night was spoiled by the Los Angeles Kings as they downed the Detroit Red Wings 3-1 on Tuesday evening at Little Caesars Arena. It was the third straight victory for Los Angeles, improving the club to 22-16-3, while its 14-6-6 record away from home stands as the third best in the Western Conference.
Kane, who recorded his 1,374th point assisting Alex DeBrincat's goal, tied Mike Modano for the most points scored by an American-born player in NHL history. The DeBrincat score was Detroit's only one of the night, coming in the closing minutes of regulation to prevent a shutout.
Neither team could find the scoreboard in the opening period, with Samuel Helenius using his second goal of the season to put the Kings in front 1-0 midway through the second. Jeff Malott picked up the assist after coming away with the puck in a scrum and finding Helenius for the straight-on shot.

Andrei Kuzmenko extended the Los Angeles lead to 2-0 with a power play goal 6:46 into the final frame, marking his 11th score of the season. Adrian Kempe and Kevin Fiala earned assists as the Kings contributed their NHL-worst 24th score with a man advantage.

With Detroit desperately seeking the game-tying score late in the third, Corey Perry iced the contest with an empty-net goal to make it 3-1. He extended his point streak to five consecutive games in the process after tying Mike Gartner for the 34th-most games played in league history (1,432) with his first shift on Tuesday.
Coming a day after their game in Columbus against the Blue Jackets was postponed due to weather, the win brings Los Angeles back up to fourth in the Pacific Division. The season series between the Kings and Red Wings is now officially wrapped up, with each side claiming a game on each other's home ice.
Looking to extend the win streak to four, Los Angeles will head to Buffalo and face the Sabres on Thursday afternoon. Buffalo, currently on its own streak of four consecutive victories, sits just four points behind Detroit in the Atlantic Division.
Puck drop is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. PT.
