Emmerdale’s Bear Wolf (Joshua Richards) is not a natural born killer.

He’s a frail man, made frail by his captors, and it was a snap in his brain that made him a murderer.

Weeks of psychological abuse and Stockholm syndrome from his slave master, Ray Walters (Joe Absolom) led him to the moment he squeezed Ray to death. And being inherently good, keeping the murder to himself has weighed heavily on Bear’s conscience.

He killed Ray in a knee-jerk reaction when he found him beating his son Paddy Kirk (Dominic Brunt).

Bear was beside himself when he regained his senses and realised what he’d done, and Paddy immediately went into protective mode. He did what he could to disrupt the investigation and prevent Bear from speaking.

But it wasn’t enough with DS Walsh at the helm, it was only a matter of time before the pressure became too much for Bear.

In the interview room, Bear breaks. He tells DS Walsh he is Ray’s killer. The trouble now is that DS Walsh is all too aware that Bear could not have covered up the murder on his own. She gently digs deeper and Bear insists he acted alone, but a further slip up gives her what she needs.

DS Walsh switches tack and starts to question about Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb). Bear lets slip that Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley) pressured him to go to the police to say he never saw Moira at Celia Daniels’ (Jaye Griffiths) farm.

Paddy is a mess as he believes he, Dylan Penders (Fred Kettle), and Bear are all destined for life behind bars, though Marlon Dingle (Mark Charnock), ever the optimist, tries to push the agenda that it was self-defence.

But Bear is too confused to keep his story straight, something that does not go unnoticed by Walsh. Paddy is with him and tries to interrupt to stop his dad saying more, but this only clues the detective in that Paddy might be implicated.

Unused to these kinds of situations, Paddy panics and begins to spiral when DC Chen arrives with the news that he and Dylan need to be interviewed.

Bear is charged with manslaughter, and the solicitor does his best to reassure Paddy that they will argue it was self-defence, but it’s feeling like a weak defence at this point.

They try and encourage Bear to think strategically about his plea, but it’s all too much, and he decides to throw the towel in and plead guilty. Paddy be taken down with him?
