Eddie Howe expects Anthony Gordon to miss Newcastle’s game with Brentford on Saturday but is hopeful that Bruno Guimaraes can feature.
Guimaraes has missed Newcastle’s last four matches with an ankle injury he sustained in last month’s Champions League tie with PSV Eindhoven.
Newcastle are winless in that time period amid a wider slump in form which has seen them pick up just one victory in their last seven games.
But Howe is hopeful that Guimaraes will be fit enough to return to the side at the weekend in a timely boost for the Magpies.
‘He is getting closer,’ the Newcastle boss said of Guimaraes in Friday’s pre-match press confernce.
‘He did a training session on Wednesday when we were travelling and felt pretty good. So, I will see him today and fingers crossed he will be fit.’
However, Howe was not so positive when asked about Gordon, who was forced off in the first-half of Newcastle’s Carabao Cup semi-final second leg against Manchester City after sustaining a hamstring injury.

‘No major update on Anthony,’ he said.
‘I think there is every chance he will miss this game but we are hoping it is not a serious injury and he will be back pretty soon.’
Elsewhere, Lewis Miley was absent from Newcastle’s matchday squad in midweek, but Howe sounded hopeful that the midfielder could be involved on Saturday.
‘We will find out today,’ he said. ‘I am waiting on an update on him. Again, it’s not a serious injury and we are hoping he will be back pretty soon.’
Newcastle’s mixed form to start the year has seen them drop to 11th in the table and eight points off the top four, but Howe insisted his players are motivated to turn their form around and salvage their league campaign.
‘My message is that we are fighting and I think you can see that on the pitch,’ he said.
‘The players are giving me everything every two, three, four days to be successful. Wednesday was disappointing. We wanted to give it a really good fight, a really good effort to try and get into the final.
‘The players were hugely motivated and then we concede early in the game and the game becomes very difficult, but credit to the players for the response in the second half.
‘They kept going, kept trying to score and creating chances right through the game and now we have to do it again. There is no break for us.
‘I can assure you that the players are maxed out physically and mentally and we obviously see them behind the scenes. That is the same with the staff, we are all trying for success.
‘It doesn’t always go in straight lines, there will be bumps in the road, as there has been this season, but we will give our all to get a positive outcome.’
