Jimmy Johnson’s usually good-natured commentary on Fox NFL Sunday earned him a spot in the National Association of Broadcasters’ Broadcasting Hall of Fame in April 2019.
His longevity as a coach — and commentator — also gives him free rein to speak his mind on topics that pique his interest.

Speaking about Football Hall of Fame voters’ decision to exclude longtime New England Patriots coach Bill Belichick this week, Johnson didn’t hold back.
“If they are using the EXCUSE of spygate that’s ridiculous…many teams (including ourselves) tried it..Howard Mudd at Kansas City who later coached for Bill Polian and Tony Dungy gave us the idea..he was the best..we didn’t get anything and stopped but many teams gave it a try,” Johnson wrote Tuesday on Twitter/X.
Speaking on the Pat McAfee show Wednesday, Johnson gave a blunt response to the host when asked him to elaborate.
“I think this tarnishes everything in the Hall of Fame,” Johnson said. “All of the inductees, everybody in the Hall of Fame, just because of 10, 11, or 12 ignorant, jealous assholes who did not vote for him. I think it tarnishes everything about the Hall of Fame.”
Johnson is one of only six head coaches in NFL history to guide a team to back-to-back Super Bowl wins. In three of his final four years with the Cowboys, he was named NFL Coach of the Year by at least one national outlet.
During that time, his clubs compiled a record of 50-22 (.694). As head coach of the Cowboys, he posted an overall 44-36 regular season record and went 7-1 in postseason play.
Belichick is a three-time AP Coach of the Year, a six-time Super Bowl champion and, at age 73, the current head coach of the University of North Carolina.
The Pro Football Hall of Fame has already inducted 382 members, who are elected by a 50-person committee comprised of media members, Hall of Famers, and others.
ESPN cited four unnamed sources in its report that Belichick will not be in the class of 2026 heading to Canton, Ohio.
