Napoli sporting director Manna plays down links to Sterling after Chelsea termination: ‘It’s unlikely’

Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has cooled speculation linking the club with a move for Raheem Sterling, suggesting a deal is unlikely despite the England international’s recent contract termination with Chelsea.

Speaking ahead of tonight’s match, coincidentally against the West London side, Manna admitted the club had previously explored the possibility of signing Sterling but indicated circumstances have changed.

“Raheem is a very good player, but he hasn’t played for a long time,” Manna said, via Sky Sport Italia.

“We spoke to him during the summer, that is no secret, but it seems unlikely today because he has some big economic demands.”

Sterling’s availability has inevitably sparked interest across Europe, but Napoli appear cautious about committing significant resources to a player who would need time to regain match fitness and rhythm.

Manna was also asked about links to Sporting winger Alisson, another name reportedly on Napoli’s radar as they look to reshape their attack. While not dismissing the interest, he made it clear the timing was not right for detailed discussions.

“We’ll see over the next few days for Alisson, it’s true that we like him, that news leaked, but it’s not respectful to talk about that now when he is playing tonight and challenging for a place in the Champions League top eight.”

Manna also touched on tonight’s must-win clash for Napoli: “It’s a tough game, it’s better to smile in these situations. We are against a strong opponent and will try to give our all in the circumstances.”
