Tinubu’s policies reviving governance, restoring hopes to Nigerians — Shagari

Former Deputy Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Muntari Shagari, says President Bola Tinubu’s policies are reviving purposeful governance and restoring hope to Nigerians at all levels.

Shagari, who was a one-time Minister of Water Resources and the current Board Chairman of the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), made the assertion in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Sokoto.

He explained that Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda was steadily reshaping Nigeria’s economy and restoring public confidence in governance.

He described the president’s economic policies as bold, timely and transformative, adding that they were designed to confront deep-rooted structural challenges inherited by the current administration.

According to him, Tinubu assumed office at a time when Nigeria was facing a battered economy, widespread despair, and soaring prices of staple food items and essential commodities beyond the reach of many citizens.

He said that within the last two years, deliberate economic reforms introduced by the administration had begun to reverse the trend, leading to a gradual drop in the prices of food items and other key commodities, easing pressure on Nigerians.

Shagari acknowledged that the reforms initially came with difficulties, stressing that they were necessary to stabilize the economy and lay a sustainable foundation for long-term growth.

He called for more understanding and cautioned that short-term discomfort should not overshadow future national benefits.

The board chairman commended Tinubu on the appointment of a retired Army General, Gen. Christopher Musa, as Minister of Defence, describing it as strategic in strengthening the fight against insecurity and terrorism across the country.

He said the appointment has brought renewed focus, professionalism and improved coordination to the nation’s security architecture, which he described as critical to restoring peace and boosting investor confidence.

“President’s support for the establishment of Dangote Refinery, particularly at a time when some powerful interests opposed the refinery’s success due to their benefits from the fuel subsidy regime.

“The commencement of operations at the refinery represents a major milestone in Nigeria’s drive toward energy security, self-sufficiency and economic independence,” Shagari said.

According to him, in his capacity as the board chairman of NIWA, he would deploy his experience to shape the agency for profitable engagements, as the blue economy is prioritised by the present administration.

He said road transportation was considered safer and more cost-effective, in line with global standards, adding that all modalities were ensured to boost the sector.

Shagari said life jackets, modern boats, and other equipment and materials would be provided in all riverine areas across the country for safer water transportation.

The NIWA chairman concluded by urging Nigerians to remain patient and support the Renewed Hope Agenda, expressing confidence that the ongoing reforms would deliver lasting prosperity and unity for the nation.
