Champions League: 3 big teams faces elimination from group stage

Several major clubs could see their Champions League journeys end when the league phase wraps up on Wednesday night.

Ajax are among those at risk, languishing in 32nd place on the 36-team standings with six points and only a faint hope of advancing.

The Dutch side must secure a crucial home win against Olympiakos to stay alive.

Napoli also find themselves in a precarious position. With eight points, they sit 25th and just outside the qualification places ahead of a decisive home clash with Chelsea.

Benfica, under the guidance of Jose Mourinho, are 29th and face a stern challenge against Real Madrid. Three points would significantly boost their chances of breaking into the qualification zone.

The competition format sees the top eight teams qualify directly for the round of 16, while those placed between ninth and 24th will battle it out in two-legged play-offs for the remaining spots. Teams finishing in the bottom 12 are eliminated.

At present, only Kairat Almaty, Eintracht Frankfurt, Villarreal and Slavia Prague have been confirmed as out of the tournament.
