Denge Josef Onoh, former Southeast Spokesman to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and Chairman of the Forum of Former Members of the Enugu State House of Assembly, has reacted to a recent statement by political commentator Reno Omokri in relation to the ongoing court case involving activist Omoyele Sowore.

Onoh’s comments followed proceedings at the Federal High Court in Abuja on January 27, 2026, during which a video from 2023 featuring Omokri was presented by Sowore’s legal team. Media reports indicated that the video formed part of the defence’s submissions in the case.

In his reaction, Onoh noted that Omokri had issued a statement clarifying that his earlier remarks were based on information he said was obtained from media sources. Onoh observed that the clarification came after the court proceedings in which the video was referenced.

Onoh stated that the matter highlights the broader impact of political commentary during election periods and the importance of accuracy and responsibility in public discourse. He added that statements made in the public space can have lasting effects, regardless of later explanations or clarifications.

Commenting on the legal process, Onoh acknowledged the right of parties in court proceedings to rely on materials they consider relevant to their defence, subject to the determination of the court. He stressed that the judiciary remains the appropriate forum for resolving such matters.

Onoh further noted that acceptance of court judgments and engagement with legal processes are integral parts of democratic governance and the rule of law. He called for restraint in public commentary on ongoing cases, urging stakeholders to allow the judicial process to run its course.

He concluded by emphasising the need for responsible communication, particularly during politically sensitive periods, and reaffirmed confidence in the courts to adjudicate matters fairly and in accordance with the law.
