Hamnet has had a good day at the Bafta nominations after being shut out of some major categories at the Oscars in a triumphant moment for British film and Paul Mescal.

Today’s Bafta nominations were announced by The Long Walk actor David Jonsson and The White Lotus star Aimee Lou Wood during a livestream on YouTube from London.

One Battle After Another, Sinners, Marty Supreme, and Hamnet came out on top, with One Battle After Another leading the nominations overall with 14 across all categories. Sinners was close behind with 13, and Marty Supreme and Hamnet picked up 11 nominations respectively.

Frankenstein received eight, and I Swear got an impressive five nods.

Additionally, Hamnet and Sinners made Bafta history as the most-nominated films from a female director and a Black director, respectively.

For some fans, the best news of the day is Paul Mescal’s nomination in the best supporting actor category, after he failed to secure an Oscar nomination.

And while Mescal is in contention for the category where he isn’t for the Academy Awards, London-born Delroy Lindo didn’t receive a nomination, a surprise following his Oscars nod. Instead, Peter Mullan secured a nomination for his performance in I Swear.

Other surprises include Amy Madigan not landing a nomination for her performance in Weapons, despite her being a favourite for the supporting actress category elsewhere, and Elle Fanning missing a nomination for her supporting role in Sentimental Value.

'Bafta nominations add a little homegrown flavour into the expected mix'

Analysis by Senior Film Reporter, Tori Brazier

The Bafta nominations have answered any remaining questions over the 2026 awards season, anointing the expected films as top of the class.

These were its best film nominees, who between them have netted the most nods this season across the Oscars, Golden Globes and similar: One Battle After Another (14 Bafta nominations overall), Sinners (13), Hamnet and Marty Supreme (both 11) and Sentimental Value (eight).

Frankenstein and Bugonia were also in the mix, as the next most-nominated movies on hauls of eight and five, but missed out on the coveted picture slot.

On the whole, Bafta voters followed the well-trodden path before them – but sadly denied One Battle After Another the chance to equal an historical record, as it would have done if every one of its 16 longlist mentions had converted to a nomination; Sir Richard Attenborough’s 1982 film Gandhi continues to have the sole claim on the most-nominated film title.

However, even if Paul Thomas Anderson’s One Battle After Another came away – just – with the most nominations, both Sinners and Hamnet were able to set their own Bafta records as the most nominated films ever by a Black director and a female director, respectively.

And while things may not have been that excitingly unpredictable, there were still a few notable diversions, with Paul Mescal firmly reinstated in the best supporting actor category after his surprising Oscars snub, alongside Peter Mullan for British film I Swear. Jess Plemons was also rightfully placed back in the actor race for his career-best performance (and I don’t say that lightly) in Bugonia.

With six slots to fill across the acting categories as opposed to the Academy’s five, there’s a bit more wiggle room too.

The supporting actress category offered the most individual flavour from the Baftas though with homegrown talent Carey Mulligan (for The Ballad of Wallis Island) and Emily Watson (for Hamnet) going up against category stalwarts Wunmi Mosaku (Sinners), Teyana Taylor (One Battle After Another) and Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (Sentimental Value). Marty Supreme’s Odessa A’zion nabbed that final slot too, making further good on her earlier Actors’ Awards (previously Sag) nomination.

But Bafta voters did give some well-earned recognition to other highly-regarded homegrown movies this year, with Pillion’s Harry Lighton breaking through into the adapted screenplay category, as well as his biker sub-dom rom-com banking nominations for outstanding British film and outstanding debut by a British writer, director or producer.

The Ballad of Wallis Island also added richly-deserved nominations for Tom Basden and Tim Key for adapted screenplay and outstanding British film to its haul as well, while Danny Boyle and Alex Garland’s long-awaited zombie horror sequel 28 Years Later is a Bafta nominee too.

H is for Hawk, Netflix’s Steve, Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy, Mr Burton and Die My Love are also in the British film category alongside I Swear, which is the quiet homegrown triumph of nominations day with five nominations.

Lead actor Robert Aramayo has added a best actor nod to his EE Rising Star Award nomination, so is rubbing shoulders with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael B. Jordan and Timothée Chalamet there, while the film also picked up original screenplay and casting nods alongside Mullan’s.

Bafta is the last awarding arts body to reveal its film nominations for the 2026 awards season, following the Academy unveiling its choices on Thursday – where vampire flick Sinners made history with 16 Oscars nominations.

Its Film Awards longlists, however, already gave an indication of the way things could go in early January, when released.

They put One Battle After Another in pole position with 16 mentions on the longlists, followed by both Hamnet and Sinners on 14, Marty Supreme on 13 and Yorgos Lanthimos’s Bugonia and Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein on 12.

The most nominated film in Bafta history is Sir Richard Attenborough’s 1982 drama Gandhi, starring Sir Ben Kingsley, which received 16 nods and went on to win five gongs, while 1969 classic Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid has the record for the most wins by a single film at nine.

Fans also got an early warning of surprising snubs for this year too, with major Hollywood A-listers like Julia Roberts, George Clooney, Dwayne Johnson, and Sydney Sweeney all being omitted at that stage.

Further to that, confirmed best actor Oscar nominee (and Golden Globe winner) Wagner Moura was not longlisted by Bafta, meaning he was already shut out of that category – although The Secret Agent picked up a an original screenplay nomination alongside its expected nod from Bafta for best film not in the English language.

KPop Demon Hunters is also a notable casualty given its dominance so far in the best animated feature and best song categories (for the smash-hit pop anthem Golden).

However, due to its straight-to-streaming release on Netflix, it does not meet eligibility criteria for the Baftas.

The Bafta Film Awards are set to take place in London on Sunday February 22, hosted by actor Alan Cumming, taking over from former Doctor Who star – and fellow Scot – David Tennant, who took on those duties in 2024 and 2025.
