Marc-André ter Stegen made a crucial save and received plenty of praise for his Girona debut after a loan move from Barcelona.

German international Ter Stegen preserved a 1-1 draw against Getafe for mid-table Girona on Monday night with a big save with his knee against Sebastian Boselli late in stoppage time.

Getafe led from Luis Vazquez, with Ter Stegen left without a chance. Girona levelled earlier in stoppage time from Vitor Reis.

"He helped us a lot in the build-up game and made an outstanding save at the end," coach Michel said in praise of Ter Stegen.

The Sport paper said: "Ter Stegen leads the way: A save that is worth a mint."

Ter Stegen, 33, joined Girona last week for the rest of the season. He was no longer first choice at Barcelona, where coach Hansi Flick prefers summer signing Joan Garcia.

Ter Stegen needs matches to his first choice status in the German national team for the World Cup in summer. He was sidelined until December after back surgery in July, with Oliver Baumamn deputizing in the national team in all World Cup qualifiers.

Ter Stegen played at Barcelona since 2014 and has a contract until 2028. His fate after the loan spell at Girona is yet to be decided.
