Southeast presidency must be earned through collaboration, not sentiment — Umahi

By Jeff Agbodo

Abakaliki — The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has urged that the Southeast region can only produce a credible presidential candidate through collaboration, development, and unity, rather than by sentiment, intimidation, or hate.

Umahi made the remarks while addressing All Progressives Congress (APC) delegates and supporters after his son, Osborne Umahi, emerged as the party’s candidate for the Chairmanship of Ohaozara Local Government Area in the upcoming August elections.

“The Southeast cannot become president by sentiments, by blackmail, by hate or intimidation. Some people talk without even understanding what they are talking about,” Umahi said. He added that the historical agitation for Biafra was “born out of neglect,” but noted that ongoing infrastructural developments under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu are bringing attention and progress to the region.

“For me, at night, President Tinubu is lighting up our Southeast roads. You don’t even need a torchlight to see what is being done in Biafra land and our rural areas,” he said. Umahi assured that when the time comes for the Southeast to produce a credible presidential candidate, a competent and respected individual will emerge.

The minister also praised Governor Francis Nwifuru for nominating his son, Osborne, for the chairmanship position. He described the nomination as a demonstration of the governor’s integrity, transparency, and commitment to the programs of both President Tinubu and the people of Ebonyi State.

“I align myself with my son’s programme of opening all the roads in villages, connecting farmlands and markets, establishing agricultural clusters, and empowering the youths,” Umahi stated.

In his acceptance speech, Osborne Umahi pledged to focus on massive road infrastructure projects to improve connectivity between farmlands and markets, and to implement policies aimed at empowering the youth and creating employment opportunities across Ohaozara Local Government Area.
