‘I would like to reassure the community that we believe this is a targeted incident, and there is no wider threat to the general public.’

Richmond Street runs parallel to the iconic Canal Street, known for its gay bars and clubs.

Labour councillor Sam Wheeler, one of the three councillors for the Piccadilly ward, said that he is waiting to get more information about the incident.

He told Metro: ‘I have been informed of the incident and I am waiting to get more details from the Greater Manchester Police.’

Manchester’s Gay Village rose to fame in the late 1980s and 1990s when the city’s nightlife boomed thanks to the Hacienda club and the opening of Manto in the heart of the village.
