Man dies after falling from Sydney balcony after DV call

A man has died after falling from a seventh floor balcony in Sydney's west in what police called an "absolutely tragic" incident.

Police were called by a woman to a family domestic violence case at units on Hamilton Road in Fairfield at 2.10am today.

Officers found a 55-year-old man straddling the balcony railing of a seventh-floor unit.

Police spoke to him from the ground as others headed upstairs but he fell, suffering head injuries.

NSW Ambulance paramedics tried to save him but he died.

"This is an absolutely tragic set of circumstances," NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Brett McFadden said.

"Part of the investigation will look at the domestic and family violence that's taken place on the day."

He said an AVO was in place but it didn't specifically prevent contact.

"It is a complex set of circumstances involving the two people, a man and a woman," he said.

A 46-year-old woman, who was inside the unit, was assessed for shock and minor injuries.

A crime scene was set up and an investigation launched.

It'll be the subject of an independent review by the Professional Standards Command and oversight by the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission.
