A drink driver was caught downing whisky while joyriding a stolen forklift – but was arrested when he drove straight towards a police car.

The motorist – who has not been named – was caught after taking the forklift for a spin around a seaside town at 2am in September.

After passing a roundabout, he was met by a police car heading in the opposite direction, which spotted him clutching a bottle of whisky at the controls.

North Wales Police said two PCs were on patrol in Colwyn Bay when they spotted the driver holding the booze.

The force said: ‘An intoxicated male decided to take a forklift without the owner’s consent and go for a drive.’

‘The man was stopped shortly after by officers and arrested for taking a motor vehicle without the owner’s consent and failing to provide a roadside specimen for analysis.

‘Upon searching the male, he was found to be in possession of a bladed article for which he was also arrested.’

The man pled guilty in court and later received a suspended sentence order, unpaid work requirements, and an alcohol abstinence requirement.

He’s also been given a rehabilitation activity requirement and has been disqualified from driving for 48 months.

Last year in Cork, Ireland, four apparently drunken men took a scissor lift for a joyride.

The group gained control of the utility vehicle, which was stationed in a quayside, and drove it around the city centre.

They were heard triumphantly shouting while waving their arms about as they careened down a street.

At one point, the vehicle veers towards the pavement and only narrowly avoids hitting a pedestrian by crashing into a bollard.
