EU needs another ‘coalition of the willing’ to defend itself – Spanish FM

Jose Manuel Albares has called for an integrated defense industry and sovereign force as the Greenland crisis deepens a rift in NATO

Spain has called for the creation of a European “coalition of the willing” to defend the continent, framing the proposal as a necessary step toward strategic sovereignty amid a historic rift with the US.

In an interview with Der Spiegel published on Tuesday, Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares stated that the EU must forge its own military alliance to ensure its security. “First, we need to integrate our defense industries. And second, we need to form a coalition of the willing. If we are ready to do this for Ukraine, we should be equally ready to defend the EU.”

He warned that the crisis over US President Donald Trump’s push to annex Greenland from Denmark threatens the entire international order, adding that “the alternative is the law of the jungle, the law of the strongest. If that prevails, no country will be safe,” he said.

Earlier this week, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov similarly described the Greenland standoff as a “deep crisis” for NATO that upends the Western ‘rules-based order’. He said the situation proves the rules of conduct on the international stage have been “thrown out the window” and replaced by a game of “might makes right.”

Albares’ comments come amid reports that the Pentagon is planning to reduce US participation in NATO advisory and training bodies, according to the Washington Post. Trump has also publicly called on European NATO members to play a larger role in their own defense, while doubting they would ever actually help the US, stating: “I just really do question whether or not they’ll come to our [rescue].”

Meanwhile, Trump’s threats of military action against Denmark over Greenland have sparked outrage in the EU. Belgian Prime Minister Bart De Wever said the US president’s threats are “unheard of” and that Europe must now choose between “self respect” and being a “miserable slave,” warning of “the end of an era of 80 years of Atlantism.”
