A former Spandau Ballet frontman has denied attempting to rape a woman in Thailand, a jury has heard.

In his police interview, Ross Davidson said he had only consensual sex with a tourist he met on Tinder in Thailand in 2019, and any attempted rape claim by her is ‘absolutely false’.

Davidson, 37, of Finchley, north London, is on trial at Wood Green Crown Court, where he has denied charges of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, says she woke up to find Davidson trying to have sex with her in a hotel without her permission or a condom.

Davidson, who used the stage name of Ross Wild, had starred in the Queen-based West End musical We Will Rock You and performed in 2018 as the singer for 1980s favourites Spandau Ballet.

The Aberdeen-born musical theatre actor, aspiring songwriter, and singer is alleged to have raped a woman and filmed himself groping another.

In his police interview, Davidson described a whirlwind romance with the woman in Thailand, where they had consensual sex and talked about their ‘kinks and fantasies, very normal fantasises’, the jury heard.

He described the few days he spent with her as being filled with sex and drugs, calling it ‘just debaucherous, fun, and free; everyone was super happy, nothing bad, I cared for this girl’.

The jury heard they got very drunk and had sex before spending time together in the following days sightseeing and on a beach trip.

The alleged attempted rape happened after Davidson and the woman had drunken sex the night before, the trial has heard.

Davidson told the detectives: ‘Why would somebody, if I had done something as horrific as that, come with me for the next day and go all around the area?’

He said she ‘told me she was in love with me’ and added, ‘it wasn’t reciprocated’.

Davidson also told the detectives: ‘I am sure attempted rape is a traumatic experience. How the hell would you spend time with someone intimately in their hotel if someone had tried to rape you?’

He described the woman as ‘beautiful’ and ‘intelligent’ and said he had to go out to restock on condoms during a night where they had sex multiple times.

Davidson said: ‘It was a sex-fuelled night, completely consensual, and everything was hunky-dory.’

On the day of the alleged rape, the woman woke him up the next morning, as she needed to collect her things from her hostel ahead of their sightseeing trip, according to Davidson.

The court heard he flatly denied suggestions he had tried to have sex with her without her permission, telling the detectives it ‘absolutely’ did not happen.

In giving evidence, the woman told the jury that Davidson told her, ‘Thanks for being cool about it’ when she calmly talked him down from raping her.

In his interview, Davidson said ‘this is a fictitious moment; this never, ever happened’.

He said what happened had come after they had ‘a mutual discussion about kinks’.

Davidson said it was ‘a lot of sex, a lot of alcohol, and a lot of fun – it’s as simple as that, and that is what happens when you are on your holidays when one is not a square’.

There were photographs and ‘messages of adoration for each other’ from their time together, he told the detectives.

Detectives tracked down the tourist after finding video footage of her on Davidson’s mobile phone, where she is lying down ‘at least half naked’ in a hotel bedroom in Phuket, Thailand, the prosecution said.

She is fondled while snoring, ‘asleep, still, and unresponsive’, the jury has been told.

The woman had no idea the video existed until the police told her in 2023.

Davidson has pleaded not guilty to the attempted rape and sexual assault of the woman in Thailand in December 2019.

The jury has been told he also pleaded guilty to a charge of voyeurism in December 2019 against the same woman.

Davidson has also denied the rape of a woman in London in March 2015.

The trial continues.
