Why GTA 6 is not my most anticipated video game of 2026 – Reader’s Feature

Is GTA 6 your number one pick? (Rockstar Games)

A reader lists the 10 games he’s most looking forward to this year but explains that while he’s interested in GTA 6 it’s no longer his number one pick.

I’ve previously discussed my backlog of games from 2025. Now I thought I’d look ahead to 2026 and my most anticipated games and hoped for announcements from the big console manufacturers.

My most anticipated games of 2026:

10. Final Fantasy 7 Remake (Switch 2)

I’ve never played the original and only ever played the demo for the remake. I’m slightly tempted to play the Switch 1 version, but I’ll probably wait for a price drop and when I have more time.

9. The Duskbloods

I enjoyed Elden Ring and in fact it’s one of my favourite games ever. However, I’ve never really cared for other FromSoftware games. I think the reason is that with Elden Ring you could simply take a different path if stuck and level up your player first, where with other games you simply have to ‘git gud’. I’m not sure yet about which way The Duskbloods will go, either linear or open world, but I’m interested to find out.

8. Super Mario Bros. Wonder – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition + Meetup In Bellabel Park

I very much enjoyed Super Mario Bros. Wonder when it first came out. However, I traded it in at the time. I wouldn’t mind replaying it given that the Switch 2 Edition looks to add new content. I’m not sure I care enough to pay probably £65 though, so I’ll keep an eye out to see if I can get a Switch 1 version for cheap and pay the extra upgrade fee.

7. Indiana Jones And The Great Circle

I played a little of this on Game Pass when it released at the time but didn’t get very far. I don’t know why, I think I got stuck on a puzzle and then never went back to it. I actually remember thinking the game was different than what I expected it to be, with an emphasis on puzzles and exploration, which I feel Tomb Raider and Uncharted could learn from. I think if the price is right, I might give it another go on Switch 2.

6. Fable

I never played any of the original games, but I do like what Playground Games have done with the Forza Horizon games, so am keen to see what they do with a different genre of game.

5. Marvel’s Wolverine

I have a lot of love for Marvel’s Spider-Man and Miles Morales, so am intrigued to see how Wolverine turns out. My only slight concern is that I haven’t yet managed to play Spider-Man 2. I think I perhaps played the first two games in the series too much and perhaps lost some enthusiasm and I’ve yet to see anything that suggests Wolverine won’t be a very similar experience.

4. Control: Resonant

Control was one of my favourite games of 2019. The gunplay was competent enough but where it really excels was the array of telekinetic powers the main character, Jesse, has at her disposal. Although I didn’t always have a clue what was going on, I still enjoyed the tone of the narrative and the spooky, sinister vibes. I hope the follow up is as good.

3. Resident Evil Requiem

I wouldn’t call myself a huge Resident Evil fan, but I’ve still played most of the games. I haven’t watched loads of footage, but what I’ve seen looks promising. I like the idea of some of it being set in Racoon City, and of course Leon and even better zombies! I wouldn’t normally pre-order but have seen a good offer on the Switch 2 version, so am considering doing so.

2. GTA 6

Really, this should be number one of this list. However, the way Rockstar Games has behaved towards their staff has soured things a little. Also, I can’t shake the feeling that it’ll be delayed again. Hopefully we’ll get some gameplay footage soon, because it seems like forever since we last saw a trailer. Still, I’m sure this will be a once in a generation game that will push current hardware to the limit.

1. Forza Horizon 6

Usually I don’t care for racing games, but I’ll make an exception for the Forza Horizon series. I love the variety of the different races. Off-road, street racing, speed traps, stunts and my personal favourite, the showcase events such as racing a train. I hope it’s a day one release on PlayStation 5. If not, I might have to see how it runs on my Legion Go.

My wishes for the big three for 2026:

Nintendo

For Nintendo, I’d like a big announcement for either Zelda or Mario. Zelda is probably less likely, given it’s not long since Tears Of The Kingdom but perhaps a spin off or a remaster/remake. Mario, on the other hand, is due for a new 3D game. Other than that, I’d like more ports and day one releases with PlayStation 5/Xbox.

Sony

A few more exclusives, please. Wolverine is a step in the right direction but the PlayStation 5 hasn’t lived up to the PlayStation 4 so far. I’d also like to see more footage of Intergalactic: The Heretic Prophet. Also, more information about the much-rumoured PlayStation 6.

Microsoft

At this point, I don’t know what Microsoft can do to turn things around. I think there was a rumour that the next gen Xbox would be essentially a PC. Access to first party Sony exclusives via Steam and Game Pass all in one machine seemed like a great idea. But now with the Game Pass price rise it seems less so. My hope is that they reconsider the price rise and, even better, make Game Pass available on other platforms. If not, then at least more day one Xbox games on PlayStation 5 and Switch 2, please.
