The following article contains spoilers from the episode of Emmerdale dated January 16. It hasn’t aired on ITV1 yet, but can be viewed on ITVX.
An Emmerdale detective was back in town in today’s episode to discuss a murder that took place six years ago.
At the star of the month, Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) was one of the many residents caught up in the crash in Corriedale.
Joe was knocked to the floor as a result of being hit by the mini bus explosion. Moments later, a man in a hooded jacket was stood beside Joe, who later turned out to be the apparently dead Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough).
Graham was driving a van that had Jodie Ramsey (Olivia Frances Brown) in the back of it when he got stuck in the traffic brought on as a result of the collision. After spotting Joe, Graham couldn’t help pay him a visit in hospital. Joe briefly made eye contact with Graham but as he was concussed, he’s tried to convince himself that he just saw someone who looked like him.
But he didn’t.
In the latest instalment, Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley) found Joe in Home Farm looking worried. Considering she rarely sees her partner like this, Dawn knew that something was bothering him a great deal.
Joe opened up to Dawn and told her that he thinks he saw Graham the night of the crash.
Dawn told Joe it was totally absurd and he agreed, but also couldn’t shake the feeling that he definitely saw him.
He admitted to Dawn that he had been speaking with a PI about Graham, and was meeting her that afternoon.
Dawn came along to this meeting, and joined Joe in being introduced to Detective Dent. She is played by Linda Armstrong, and investigated Graham’s murder back in 2020.
Dent looked at a picture of Graham and outright confirmed he is definitely dead, because she saw his body. It was enough for Joe’s thoughts about him to get washed away, but little did he know Dent was covering up the truth.

We saw Dent on the phone a while later, explaining to someone that she told Joe exactly what he needed to hear.
Was she on the phone to Graham?
Joe will put Graham to the back of his mind now, but will inevitably come face to face with him, as producer Laura Shaw has explained we will learn more about Graham faking his death, as the character heads back to the village.
‘His return will have massive repercussions for both Kim Tate (Claire King), with whom he shares a complex love and hate relationship, and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), who was about to run away with him’, she said.
‘Graham will explain exactly what happened six years ago when he was ‘killed’, but the question will be whether Joe can ever forgive his father-figure for allowing him to believe he was dead’.
