Towards the end of last year, Coronation Street’s Roy Cropper (David Neilson) started writing letters to prisoners.
As someone who spent time behind bars himself, Roy knows what it feels like to feel vulnerable and alone while there, so he decided to start communicating with those on the inside as a small way of trying to help.
Things have developed further than perhaps Roy was anticipating though, as he’s now receiving letters from a woman called Alice, the mother of one of the prisoner’s Roy has been speaking with.
He explained to Shona Platt (Julia Goulding) and Nina Lucas (Mollie Gallagher) previously that they had continued writing to each other, but that he had been thrown by the latest letter, as it seemed to have romantic undertones.
Roy admitted that the change of tone had knocked him, and Nina and Shona were quick to offer advice.
Shona instructed Roy to be transparent with Alice, but Roy was concerned he wouldn’t be able to articulate his feelings.
Roy’s developing connection with Alice continues in upcoming episodes, as he sits down in the café ready to write his next letter to her. Sat beside him is Nina, who cannot help but tease Roy and suggest he takes his relationship with Alice to the next level.
Troubled, Roy takes offence and storms out.
It’s possible Roy reacts in this way as it happens a couple of days before the anniversary of Hayley Cropper’s death. After time at the boating lake, the place where Hayley’s ashes are scattered, Roy returns home.
He then gets talking to Nina about Alice once more. They discuss Alice’s authenticity and the fact that she probably isn’t a catfisher. A few moments later, Roy gets a text from her.
How long will it be until Roy sees Alice in person?
Could this be the start of a new romance for him?

Or will the fears about Alice not being real come true?
Coronation Street producer Kate Brooks has confirmed that Roy will be pulled into another storyline this year, involving Bernie Winter (Jane Hazlegrove).
‘Obviously it’s going to be a test for Bernie and Dev’, she said, teasing what’s ahead.
‘They are a really strong couple and no matter what we throw at them, they can overcome because they love each other. They absolutely adore each other.’
‘So it’s a big test for them, it’s a big story for Bernie. Roy’s embroiled in that story as well. It’s a really interesting one to keep an eye on because it’s going to be quite a big start to the year for Bernie.’
