Games should look and run better on the PS5 Pro in the future, following a rumoured update that’s meant to be out by March.

On the whole, the PlayStation 5 is doing quite well for itself, having reached lifetime sales of 84 million last year. That said, it’s not known how many of those are for the more expensive PS5 Pro.

Announced as an even more powerful version of the console, many were naturally put off by its high price tag of £699.99 and there have been criticisms about how minimal the performance improvements actually are. In some cases, games look and run worse than on a regular PlayStation 5, such as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater.

If a new leak is to be believed, though, Sony is prepping an update for the PS5 Pro that should vastly improve the console’s PSSR and appease disillusioned customers.

As a reminder, PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution and is Sony’s own unique brand of AI upscaling, which can bump up games’ resolution and fix graphical errors at very little processing cost.

According to a Japanese leaker known as Gust_FAN on X, a ‘major’ PSSR 2.0 update is on its way and should arrive any time between now and the end of March.

The update should not only improve general image quality and performance but also boost frame rates for games that currently cap at 70 to 80 frames per second.

The update will also upscale ‘classic’ games to higher resolutions, although it’s unclear if Gust_FAN is referring to PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 games available on PlayStation Plus’ retro catalogue or just PlayStation 4 games playable through backwards compatibility.

Another leaker, Moore’s Law Is Dead, who’s been a frequent source of PlayStation 6 rumours, has chimed in to say this could corroborate info he shared this past December.

At the time, he claimed to have heard that a ‘big’ PSSR 2 update was on its way and that Sony was providing developers new tools to help deal with graphical issues and deliver improved image quality.

Both leaks also compare the update to AMD’s FSR 4 upscaling technology, which is used for PC games. AMD is helping out with the PlayStation 6 but it’s unclear if this means AMD will supply its own upscaling tech to Sony’s hardware next generation or if it’ll just use PSSR.

Last year, AMD senior vice president Jack Huynh described Sony and AMD’s partnership as one that’s ‘focused on machine learning-driven graphics and gameplay innovations.’

It’s also not known if Sony will even properly announce the update or just quietly release it with no fanfare. Whatever the case, this should make PS5 Pro owners happy, even if it’s unlikely to trigger a huge uptick in sales for the console.
