Around 2.5 million people in the UK are thought to be taking weight loss medication, like Ozempic and Mounjaro.
The drugs, which reduce people’s appetites and increase feelings of fullness, have become so popular that supermarkets are now even creating food ranges designed specifically for those using them.
M&S recently unveiled a new range called Nutrient Dense, featuring salads, snacks, and meals that are said to be helpful for those ‘monitoring their calorie intake due to lifestyle, age or weight loss medication’.
Morrisons has also launched a brand new ready meal range called Small & Balanced for those using the likes of Wegovy, and now Ocado has jumped on the bandwagon too.
The online retailer has curated a new selection of ‘GLP-1 friendly’ products on its site, which they’ve called the ‘Weight Management aisle’, and it includes an extra small, extra lean steak.
The Turf & Clover Steak costs £3.50 for 100g and is described as being ‘high in protein and naturally rich in B12 and iron’.
The small steak has captured attention on social media and divided people, with some branding it ‘ridiculous’ and claiming ‘the world’s gone mad’ in comments on Facebook.
However, others were all for reduced portions, hailing the steak as ‘sensible’ and saying it’s ‘what they want’ to eat in comments on Facebook.
Ocado claims the range, which also features meals under 600 calories and various M&S Nutrient Dense products, is a response to ‘a growing number of customers seeking smaller portions and nutrient-dense options’.
Charlie Parker, Senior Nutritionist at Ocado Retail, said: ‘As weight loss medications become more widely used, it’s crucial that diet and nutrition remain part of the conversation. Preserving lean muscle mass plays an important role in long-term health, metabolism and overall well-being.
‘We’re seeing customers actively seek out high-protein, high-fibre foods and balanced meal options to support healthier weight loss journeys and with reduced appetites. With our unrivalled range, Ocado’s new Weight Management aisle is here to make it easier for customers to make informed choices that support their goals beyond the number on the scales.’
What’s in the new Nutrient Dense range at M&S?
The are 20 items in the range, and according to M&S, the products are all made with whole foods and store cupboard ingredients.
Each product contains at least 1 of 10 micronutrients, such as vitamin D, iron, folate and vitamin B12.
Products include Cocoa Chia Mousse, Roasted Butternut and Almond Grains, Satay Chicken and Black Rice Mango Salad, Super Seeded Crackers, Romesco Chicken, Tandoori Chicken and Cauli Rice Prawn Paella.
The range also features the H₅O shot and bread such as the Super Seeded Oaty Bread.
The H₅O shot is made with coconut water, blended with cold-pressed ginger juice, fruit and vegetable fibres, sea moss and unique botanicals – panax ginseng, Japanese honeysuckle, ginger, yellow passionfruit and green cardamom.
It is named H₅O because of the five botanical ingredients, which have been selected and verified by scientists at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew.
Speaking about the new launch, Grace Ricotti, the head of food nutrition at M&S, said: ‘Our Nutrient Dense range is perfect for customers looking to support their health as each recipe is packed with the key nutrients we all need in our diets.
‘With the increase in popularity of weight-loss injections, a reduced appetite can mean missing out on important nutrients, and that’s why nutrient density is so important.

‘These new meals, snacks and drinks can help everyone get more fibre, vitamins and minerals in their diet. We challenged ourselves to make products that are denser in nutrients than calories, so every single mouthful is packed full of more of the good stuff we all need.’
She continues: ‘The importance of us all eating enough fibre cannot be overestimated. As well as helping day to day with effective digestion, long-term it is important to reduce the risk of bowel cancer and so many other diseases. Products such as our Nutrient Dense Super Seeded Oaty Bread, which has 13g of fibre in two slices, are aimed at making it super easy for customers to reach the recommended 30g a day.’
M&S aren’t the first to create a range like this, though, as Morrisons also recently announced a brand new ready meal range for those taking the likes of Wegovy.
The supermarket is set to launch a selection of 53 Applied Nutrition items on shelves in January, and seven of these products will be known as ‘Small & Balanced’ meals.
These meals have all been ‘created to deliver a nutrient-dense and controlled portion tailored to the needs of customers embarking on a weight-loss journey with medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy or Mounjaro’.
What is in Morrisons’ Small & Balanced meals range?
The Small & Balanced range will feature several classic meals, including spaghetti and meatballs, cottage pie, sweet chilli prawn noodles and chicken casserole.
Prices will start from £3.75, and each ready meal is available as a single-serve tray and comes in microwave-friendly packaging.
The wider nutrition range also features pizzas, protein pasta, protein ice cream, cheeses and to-go items like chicken fajita wraps and salads.
Speaking about the new items, Lizzy Massey, own brand director at Morrisons, said: ‘With more customers taking steps to improve their health and wellness, it feels like a natural step forward to welcome Applied Nutrition’s exclusive collaboration with us to Morrisons aisles.
‘The new range has been carefully designed with their expert team to help supplement customers’ nutrition while on their fitness and weight loss journeys, and we’re delighted to welcome the broad range to Morrisons, offering our shoppers even more choice, at great value.’
The Applied Nutrition range will be exclusive to Morrisons, and customers can buy the products now.
