The Call (2020) – 100% Rotten Tomatoes score

The Call
Let’s start strong with a title that carries a rarely-spotted perfect score on Rotten Tomatoes. Seo-yeon answers a phone and soon regrets it when she finds herself speaking to a woman living in the same house 20 years in the past. The mysterious connection soon spirals into a deadly game with all the creepy house vibes you’d expect. Critic Chad Collins from Dread Central said: ‘From credits to the final frame, The Call leaves a lasting impact, an almost congenital terror that’s certain to break your heart and scare you senseless.’ (Picture: Netflix)

Rebel Ridge (2024) – 95% Rotten Tomatoes score

Moving over to action thriller and a star-making performance from Aaron Pierre. It’s one where tension builds alongside the desperation, as an ex-Marine violently wakes up a sleepy town when the bail money he puts up for his cousin is taken by a corrupt cop with a terrible judge of character. Ramble on with Buffa said on Rotten Tomatoes: ‘You won’t find many 131-minute action thrillers paced better than Saulnier’s latest banger. The writer/director shoots action scenes that aren’t dizzying yet enthralling, and he knows how to add a little grit to the direction.’ (Picture: Netflix/Everett/REX/Shutterstock)

Woman of the Hour (2024) – 91% Rotten Tomatoes score

Anna Kendrick, star of the colourful and breezy Pitch Perfect and Trolls franchises, tackles victim-blaming head-on in her directorial debut. Based on a true story, the film follows an aspiring actress in 1970s Los Angeles who winds up on a blind‑dating TV show alongside a charismatic stranger – who turns out to be later-identified serial killer Rodney Alcala. As he slowly reveals his true nature, what started as an exciting opportunity becomes a tense and terrifying fight for survival. Matthew Koss of The Wandering Screen said: ‘Woman of the Hour is not just a film about a chilling true story—it’s a poignant exploration of the darker sides of charm and vulnerability, all wrapped in Kendrick’s innovative directorial style.’ (Picture: AP)

Carry-On (2024) – 88% Rotten Tomatoes score

It’s likely you’ve already chosen to watch or avoid this one. It was given the full Netflix PR machine treatment on its release in 2024, propelling it to become the third most-watched English-language movie in the platform’s history, behind Red Notice and those KPop Demon Hunters. While critics rate it at a very impressive 88%, armchair fans weren’t so kind – marking it at just 52%. It follows a young TSA agent, played by Taron Egerton, who is blackmailed on Christmas Eve into letting a dangerous package slip onto a flight – or else risk the safety of his girlfriend. You’ll have to find out yourself which score you agree with. (Picture: Netflix)

Fair Play (2023) – 86% Rotten Tomatoes score

A young couple’s relationship begins to unravel when an unexpected promotion at a cutthroat Manhattan hedge fund puts her career ahead of his. As power and ambition tear them apart, personal resentments and workplace pressure push their romance into dark territory with tension that never lets up once the wheels start to fall off. Austin Burke of Flick Fan Nation said: ‘Fair Play features two phenomenal and emotional performances at the center, and there is an intensity that will have viewers locked in until the end.’ (Picture: Sergej Radovic / Netflix)

The Platform (2019) – 81% Rotten Tomatoes score

THE PLATFORM EL HOYO TRAILER Directed by Galder Gaztelu-Urrutia Spain, 2019
This probably isn’t one to watch with snacks. The disturbing concept builds a vertical prison where inmates are fed via a platform that descends floor by floor, meaning those at the bottom are at the mercy of the greed of those above. It’s violent and disgusting in equal measure, yet one you won’t be able to look away from. Gael Fashingbauer Cooper of CNET said: ‘I’m glad I watched The Platform. I think about it often. But I will never, ever watch it again.’ Good luck. (Picture: Netflix)
