Joe Tate (Ned Porteous) is always one to cause trouble in Emmerdale.

Shortly after his return in December 2024, he was part of a storyline that saw him try and illegally secure a kidney from one of his relatives.

The storyline had many twists and turns, but concluded when Joe managed to get dodgy surgeon Doctor Crowley (James Hillier) to perform the transplant on him and an oblivious Caleb Miligan (William Ash).

Away from this plot, Joe began an affair with Dawn Taylor (Olivia Bromley). When the truth got out, Dawn had to choose between Joe and husband Billy Fletcher (Jay Kontzle).

Dawn chose Joe over Billy, and has navigated the challenges of co-parenting, and the drama that comes with being in a relationship with a Tate, ever since.

We’re only a few days into 2026, but already Joe has been getting on the wrong side of plenty of villagers. Let’s bring you up to speed on everything that’s happened with Joe so far this year, including his involvement in Corriedale.

What happened in Corriedale?

Oh gosh, where to start!

The dramatic crossover event kicked off when Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller) and John Sugden (Oliver Farnworth) crashed into a car that was being driven by the Swains from Coronation Street.

Other characters from both soaps caught up in the crash included Billy Mayhew (Daniel Brocklebank), Mackenzie Boyd (Lawrence Robb), Cain and Moira Dingle (Jeff Hordley and Natalie J Robb), and Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard). Billy sadly died in the ordeal, after becoming trapped in the minibus before it exploded.

The episode also confirmed that John had been murdered, with fans later discovering sister Victoria Sugden (Isabel Hodgins) killed him after injecting a drug into his system.

Prior to Robert’s arrival at the scene, he had been knocked out by Aaron at Mill Cottage flat.

As soon as Robert woke up, he staggered outside and called for help. He bumped into a concerned Joe Tate, who decided to do as Robert asked.

The minibus explosion sent Joe to the ground and knocked him out for a brief moment. The chaos of the ordeal and Joe’s confusion meant he failed to recognise who was standing over him.

The man in the van wearing a black jacket was later revealed to be Graham Foster (Andrew Scarborough).

Afterwards, Joe got up and wandered into the woods. He saw Vic covering up John’s murder and recorded it on his phone. He is now using this footage to blackmail the Sugden siblings.

Given his developing storyline with Robert and Moira Dingle (Natalie J Robb) at the moment, it’s safe to assume that Joe isn’t leaving Emmerdale anytime soon.

He will also have the return of Graham Foster to contend with – which is going to be huge.

‘A familiar face is returning to the village full-time! None other than Graham Foster will make a sensational comeback,’ Emmerdale’s producer, Laura Shaw, enthused.

‘His return will have massive repercussions for both Kim Tate (Claire King), with whom he shares a complex love and hate relationship, and Rhona Goskirk (Zoe Henry), who was about to run away with him.

‘Graham will explain exactly what happened six years ago when he was ‘killed’, but the question will be whether Joe can ever forgive his father-figure for allowing him to believe he was dead’.
