Former British and Commonwealth Light heavyweight boxing champion Peter Oboh has praised his compatriot and two-time world heavyweight champion Anthony Joshua for his decision to retire from boxing, at least, for now.
During the week, Joshua told close relatives that he was considering retirement from boxing following a tragic car accident in Nigeria that claimed the lives of two of his close friends and team members..
Reacting to the news, Oboh who fought under the British flag in his active days endorsed the boxer’s decision, claiming, “it is the best decision to me for now.”
He said, “Losing two very close friends in one day is not easy to overcome because he is human.”
He observed that the boxer may look physically alright, “but emotionally, physically and psychologically, he can’t be alright,” Oboh emphasised.
He acknowledged that Anthony Joshua has achieved all he needed in boxing. “The gospel truth is, what Joshua has already achieved in boxing is so great to me that I think he made the right decision to retire.”
He posited that what Joshua has achieved in boxing is far more that what he could achieve again, even if he decides to return to the ring today. “Joshua’s career was already going down. To me, he shouldn’t come back because he has seen it all. From Olympics gold medal to becoming a two-time world champion in one of the most demanding divisions, the heavyweight class is not a mean feat. What is he coming back to do?” He asked.
He said the proposed all-British dream fight between Anthony Joshua and Tyson Fury should not be a consideration. Said he, “There are certain things that are not meant to be. Joshua should forget about that fight, for now and concentrate on his recovery.
Never the less my heart is still with the family of those two friends of joshua that died in the horror able Nigeria Ogun state car crash my their lovely soul rest in peace
