Celebrity Traitors star Cat Burns has opened up about her decision to have breast reduction surgery in a powerful post on social media.
The 25-year-old singer-songwriter won the nation’s heart last autumn after making it almost all the way to the end as a Traitor, and forging plenty of memorable moments along the way.
The music artist has also been candid about her life experiences and in the show even opened up about navigating the world with ADHD and autism, which inspired co-star Kate Garraway to seek her own diagnosis.
Now, Cat is sharing a very different health journey after she took to her Instagram story to talk about why she got a breast reduction with her ‘understanding community of people’.
Alongside a selfie taken of her in hospital, she wrote that she had gone ‘back and forth’ on whether to share this part of her life before deciding to go for it.
The Go hitmaker continued: ‘I’ve always struggled with my boobies since they arrived on my chest at like 12. They caused me so much pain when exercising and I deeply hated the oversexualisation it brought.’
After trying different ways to ‘work with her body’ and ‘wearing different bras’ she decided that while she is ‘young and healthy’ and able to get surgery, she would.
‘I want to love my body going into the next part of my life! Today marks the start of my new life!’ she added.
She confirmed surgery had ‘gone well’ and poignantly noted that she ‘had a big fat cry’ after seeing her mum and sister, calling the ‘amount relief and happiness’ she felt ‘overwhelming’.
In a chat with Metro after Celebrity Traitors finished airing, Cat reflected on the impact of being candid about her Autism and ADHD diagnosis on national TV.
She explained: ‘Especially since the show coming out, and with people thanking my vulnerability, I didn’t realise how important it was.
‘I know it’s always important to speak about it. But I think I have the privilege of working for myself and being in control a little bit more. So I’m able to talk about these things openly.
‘Whereas maybe other autistic people or people with ADHD in more of a corporate work space might struggle to speak up about that because maybe their needs aren’t being met in the same way.’
All of this helped her realise it’s ‘really important’ to speak up, ‘so it’s not as much of a taboo.’
The Traitors UK franchise has been praised for its wide-ranging and meaningful disability representation, including from the contestants itself.
Traitors winner Jake Brown, who has cerebral palsy, told Metro: ‘I’ve had so many messages from people saying: “I feel seen. I feel heard. It’s nice to see someone like myself on screen.” So I’m hoping that off the back of that other shows will do the same,’
