Real talk: just because a movie is made by Netflix and features a star-studded line-up, it does not mean that it’s going to be a hit. Granted, the streaming platform produced some epic films last year, from Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein to the new Knives Out Mystery, ‘Wake Up Dead Man.’ However, there were some underperformers, too. Here we unpack seven of 2025’s biggest flops, many of which had mind-blowing budgets. (Picture: Netflix)

Back in Action

Back in Action marked Cameron Diaz’s first film role in over a decade. But sadly the A-lister’s return wasn’t enough for it to achieve success. The premise follows former CIA spies Emily and Matt, who are forced back into the world of espionage after their secret identities are exposed. The film only scored 31% on Rotten Tomatoes’ Tomatometer, the review aggregator’s critics platform. This is despite a huge production budget of around $207 million. (Picture: AP)

Kinda Pregnant

Kinda Pregnant, a movie about a woman who pretends to be pregnant, garnered controversy from the start (for obvious reasons). So it was always going to go one of two ways: a storming success, or a major flop. We now know that it was the latter. The movie generated a 28% Rotten Tomatoes score and was panned by critics, who said it wasn’t ‘memorable,’ and ‘not funny enough to warrant you spending time on it.’ Despite this, Kinda Pregnant did reach the number one spot on Netflix’s global top 10 movies chart. Millie Bobby Brown and Chris Pratt’s The Electric State had the biggest Netflix movie budget for 2025, costing over $300 million. Directed by the Russo Brothers, the sci-fi film is based on Simon Stålenhag’s illustrated novel about a teen’s journey across a post-apocalyptic America with a robot to find her brother. The film received just 14% on Rotten Tomatoes and was slated for ‘lumbering along like a giant automaton.’ Other harsh comments included: ‘The United Nations should probably intervene and impose sanctions on streamers for wasting over $300 million on movies like The Electric State.’ (Picture: AP)

My Oxford Year

My Oxford Year’s wholesome plot about an ambitious American student landing a place at Oxford University — only to fall in love with a charming local — had all the ingredients for an enjoyable rom-com. Sadly, it was branded ‘too predictable’ and relied heavily on familiar romantic tropes. Others thought there wasn’t enough emotional depth, while reviewers felt it could have been more profound. Because of this, the Tomatometer score was 29%, while the Popcornmeter (which represents general viewers) was 39%. (Picture: Netflix)

Again, even a mega name like Keira Knightley couldn’t save this psychological thriller from the critics. With a weak 28% Tomatometer score, the film saw Knightley play journalist Laura ‘Lo’ Blacklock who, on an assignment on a lavish yacht, saw a passenger go overboard. The critics’ consensus was that it was ‘saddled with a contrived plot and plodding pacing,’ and that the film ‘throws narrative logic overboard and ultimately sinks.’ (Picture: Parisa Taghizadeh/Netflix)

Madea’s Destination Wedding has the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of all, with just 11% on the Tomatometer. As Tyler Perry’s sixth film for Netflix, he reprises his role as Mabel ‘Madea’ Simmons, a character he says is based on ‘the PG version’ of his mother and aunt. In this movie, Madea heads to the Bahamas for a family wedding. The main reasons it flopped were that many felt the plot was too similar to other recent Madea offerings. They also thought some of the gags were too predictable, while some were ‘over the top.’ Elsewhere, other critics said that ‘Netflix often pushes out content for the sake of having content,’ and felt like Perry followed ‘the same model.’ (Picture: Perry Well Films 2, LLC/Quantrell Colbert. Prom Queen was the fourth instalment in the Fear Street film series, and centred around Shadyside High’s 1988 prom queen election that turned deadly. It received 27% on the Tomatometer, and despite the nostalgic 1980s setting, many felt it lacked the decade’s authentic vibe. It was also criticised for a lack of depth and originality, especially when compared to the original Fear Street trilogy. Case in point: the critics’ consensus said that the movie was ‘tired and uninspired’, and played ‘like an ’80s retread of better slashers, while ensuring the winning crown does not go to this Prom Queen.’ (Picture: Netflix, Inc/Alan Markfield.
