Darren Fletcher has stepped in to take temporary charge of Manchester United, but it is another former Red Devils player that is clear favourite to have the job on the first day of next season.
Fletcher will lead the team at Turf Moor on Wednesday night as they go away to Burnley for the first game post-Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese was sacked on Monday morning after a public spat with the club’s hierarchy following a 1-1 draw at Leeds United.
Amorim made it clear he did intend to stay beyond the contract he signed in 2024, insisting that he saw himself as a manager and not a head coach.
The board acted swiftly and the 40-year-old was gone within a matter of hours, with attention turning to who will replace him in the Old Trafford hot seat.
A wide array of candidates has emerged, without a great deal to connect the likes of Oliver Glasner, Thomas Tuchel and Gareth Southgate.
However, it is a former Manchester United manager who is now the runaway favourite to get the job and make an emotional return to Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer currently has comfortably the shortest odds to be Manchester United manager on the opening day of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
The Norwegian is a legendary player at the club, winning six Premier League titles and the Champions League in 366 appearances for the Red Devils.
He also had a stint in charge which was much longer than first expected when he was appointed as caretaker in December 2018, replacing Jose Mourinho.
Solskjaer remained in charge until November 2021, managing 168 games, but adding no silverware to his CV.

Clearly that gives the Norwegian the chance to repeat what he did in his first spell at the helm and perform so well at first that he keeps the job on a permanent basis.
Solskjaer finished his spell in charge of Manchester United with 168 games under his belt, winning 91 which gave him a win rate of 54.17 per cent.
