Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard) lives to fight another day in Coronation Street after coming close to death in last night’s epic soap crossover, Corriedale – but his luck may soon run out.
In case you missed it, Carl was caught up in a major multi-vehicle pile-up after he got behind the wheel drunk. Never do that.
When he realised that sister Debbie Webster (Sue Devaney) was still unconscious in the car, he moved her into the drivers seat, before stumbling off.
He didn’t get very far before collapsing on the side of the road, where he was later found by trainee paramedic Asha Alahan (Tanisha Gorey).
Unable to find a pulse, she began chest compressions and was ultimately able to restart his heart.
However, Carl wasn’t completely out of the woods, as he later flatlined in the hospital, with doctors rushing in to tend to him. In tonight’s episode, it was confirmed that he had survived the ordeal.
While Debbie’s first instinct was to make sure her brother was okay, Carl was determined to ensure that the accident couldn’t be linked back to him.
Viewers will know that Debbie has young-onset dementia, and Carl has been taking full advantage of that for weeks.
First, he used her memory loss to try to cover his affair with Abi Webster (Sally Carman). Then, he convinced her to give him control of her business accounts, and he has since been stealing her money.
But perhaps his cruellest move of all came this evening, when he tried to plant a false memory in Debbie’s head of the accident.
After Debbie admitted that it was all a blur, he told her that they had swapped places because she had been worried about him driving drunk.
Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell) arrived moments later and tried to tell Debbie what really happened, but it seemed he was too late. Having witnessed Carl driving off with Debbie as his passenger, he railed at his brother for trying to pass the blame onto Debbie.

However, she remained steadfast in her insistence that she had been driving when they crashed and wouldn’t hear any other explanation.
Kevin was desperate for her to realise how serious this was, and pointed out that the pattern of the bruises from the seatbelt would prove exactly which seat she was in when they crashed.
Later, Debbie did check her bruises in the privacy of her own home, but it would seem that she had already made the decision to stick to Carl’s story, whether she truly believed his version of events or not.
Meanwhile, Kevin was determined to get to the bottom of Carl’s lies. Confronting him, Kevin admitted that he had considered tampering with the hospital equipment that had been keeping Carl alive the previous evening in a bid to get rid of him.
However, he didn’t need to in the end, as the alarm started to blare, and he suspected someone else had already had a go.
Smug, Carl pointed out that he was still here, to which Kevin replied, ‘Let’s see how long for…’
It was revealed earlier in the episode that Carl has an underlying health condition – his heart had an extra pathway that sometimes misfires, and the shock of the crash set it off, throwing it into an abnormal rhythm and preventing it from pumping properly.
Armed with this knowledge, could Kevin be set to use it to get rid of Carl once and for all? And will Debbie come round to Kevin’s way of thinking, that it isn’t worth going to prison for Carl?
