Stephen Warnock has urged Manchester United to pursue an audacious attempt to lure Thomas Tuchel back to the Premier League to replace Ruben Amorim.
Ruben Amorim was sacked after 14 months at the helm on Monday, bringing and end to another failed project at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese departed less than 24 hours after an extraordinary press conference following his side’s 1-1 draw with Leeds United, and leaves with the worst win ratio of any permanent United boss.
Darren Fletcher, former midfield star and Under-18s head coach, will step up to take the reins against Burnley on Wednesday with United seeking to bring in a caretaker boss until the end of the season.
The Red Devils have reportedly made contact with both Michael Carrick and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding the interim role, with a longer-term appointment set to wait until the summer.
Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, out of contract at the end of the season, is currently one of the bookies’ favourites, but Warnock has urged United to look for someone with a bigger ‘personality’ to fill the role.
And the former Liverpool defender said United should go all out to sign current England boss Thomas Tuchel, even claiming the former Chelsea manager could be tempted to jump ship before the World Cup.
‘I said if Amorim were to get sacked, I think Tuchel would go for the job and I got laughed at for saying that because it’s a World Cup year,’ Warnock told Metro via NewBettingSites.uk.
‘I just think the day-to-day focus and Manchester United could pull him out of the job [before the World Cup].
‘But if they do decide to wait until the summer and they sign that pre-contract deal, that might be the way that Tuchel gets both sides of it – the World Cup and a big job for next season.
‘But it’d be very interesting if United made Tuchel an ultimatum and said it’s one or the other, it’s now or never. And I just think for the size of the club of United, I think it’d be such a big, big thing to turn down.’
On Tuchel’s potential appointment, Warnock continued: ‘I think he’s exactly what United need. I think he’s authoritative, I think he’s got an edge to him, I think tactically he’s brilliant.

‘He can fall out with people but I think sometimes you need that at the football club if you do it in the right manner and I think he’s exactly what United need, I really do.
‘I think it’ll be interesting to see how it plays out but it might just be that United almost write off this season again and say, ‘If you’re the right man and you only want to come past the World Cup then we’re willing to wait’. If that was the case, if I were United, I would wait for him.’
‘Volatile’ Maresca an unecessary risk
Enzo Maresca’s recent departure from Chelsea has seen the Italian’s name thrown into the hat as a potential successor for Amorm at United.
Maresca enjoyed a successful 18-month stint at Stamford Bridge, winning the Conference League and Club World Cup with the Blues, while also securing a fourth-place league finish in his only full season at the club.
Similar to Amorim, Maresca left his role after disagreement with the senior officials, and Warnock suggested that this alone would make him wary about bringing the 45-year-old to Old Trafford.
‘It’s interesting, isn’t it? All these managers know what they’re signing into, then win a few games and get a little bit of power ego and then suddenly want everything to change and they want more power,’ he added.
‘I think it was a little bit different with Maresca. What we’re hearing now is behind the scenes with the sports science guys and controlling when players can play and when they should be coming off the pitch.
‘But from United’s point of view, do they want another volatile manager who sits at press conferences doing a similar thing? I’m not so sure they do.
‘I think this will be arguably be the biggest appointment in United’s history because they’ve got to get this right. If they do not get this right again and the club don’t change, it could be another 10 years before they start to get things right.
‘So, he wouldn’t be my favourite, but I can obviously see why he would be on people’s list of a manager that would go to United.’
