Manchester United players have flooded Ruben Amorim with well-wishes on social media after he was sacked as manager on Monday.
The 40-year-old lasted just 14 months as the boss at Old Trafford, departing after a 1-1 draw at Leeds United on Sunday.
It was not the result at Elland Road which ended his tenure, though, but his words in a press conference after the draw.
The Portuguese hit out at the club’s hierarchy, insisted he is a manager and not a head coach, while also confirming that he would not be with Manchester United beyond his contract which ran until 2027.
Unsurprisingly, those comments did not sit well with Red Devils chiefs and Amorim was dismissed on Monday morning.
Amorim’s record at Manchester United was a really poor one, with last season being comfortably the worst in the club’s Premier League history.
However, The Sun report that the players are unhappy he is leaving and he was popular among the current squad, which is borne out by the string of social media messages thanking the departing boss and wishing him well.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes posted a message to Amorim in Portuguese, writing: ‘Thank you, Mister! I wish you and your technical staff all the best.’
Harry Maguire wrote on Instagram: ‘Thank you for everything boss.’
His fellow centre-back Matthijs de Ligt sent a similar message, writing: ‘Thank you for everything boss, good luck for the future.’
Players signed under Amorim’s reign publicly thanked the outgoing manager for their time together.

Man Utd statement on Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim has departed his role as Head Coach of Manchester United.
Ruben was appointed in November 2024 and led the team to a UEFA Europa League Final in Bilbao in May.
With Manchester United sitting sixth in the Premier League, the club’s leadership has reluctantly made the decision that it is the right time to make a change. This will give the team the best opportunity of the highest possible Premier League finish.
The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team against Burnley on Wednesday.
There were plenty more messages of support for Amorim, with Amad Diallo posting from AFCON: ‘Good luck, coach. Thank you for everything, I wish you all the best.’
Diogo Dalot wrote: ‘Thank you for everything, mister! And good luck for the future.’
Another full-back, Luke Shaw, chimed in: ‘Thank you for everything and wishing you the best of luck with whatever the future holds Gaffer.’
Joshua Zirkzee, who has been in and out of the team under Amorim, wrote: ‘All the best for the future boss.’
Mason Mount, who Amorim was a big fan of, added: ‘Thank you, gaffer. All the best to you and your staff for the future.’
Young striker Chido Obi, who made his senior debut for the club last season, posted: ‘Thanks for everything gaffer, especially for allowing me to make my debut for such a big club. Wish you all the best.’
The post-Amorim era begins on Wednesday night when Manchester United travel to Turf Moor to take on Burnley.
Darren Fletcher will take charge of the team for the short trip, with the Red Devils deciding whether to appoint an interim manager until the end of the season or go straight for a new permanent boss.
Crystal Palace manager Oliver Glasner is the current favourite to be the next permanent boss at Old Trafford, with the likes of Fletcher, Enzo Maresca and Gareth Southgate also considered contenders.
