Fans of The Traitors think they may have worked out who the secret Traitor might be, as the third episode teased a major twist.

Saturday night’s episode of the BBC reality series, hosted by the inimitable Claudia Winkleman, was so tense you could cut it with a knife.

The roundtable was heated, with accusations flung around, and a traitor, Hugo Lodge, finally being caught by the faithful.

At the end of another episode filled with twists and turns, the two remaining traitors were set to uncloak the secret traitor who had managed to foil their plans over the past two episodes.

But, in a frustrating cliffhanger, the episode ended as the Secret Traitor was set to be unveiled.

However, audiences have been working on a theory that in fact there is no secret traitor, and it’s all a clever ruse, to pull back Hugo into the game or reveal the traitor is existing traitor Rachel Duffy or Stephen Libby.

‘Could it be a double bluff on two of the traitors and on the TV audience, and the secret traitor is actually one of the three already-selected traitors? #TheTraitors,’ SportingNest hypothesised on X.

‘What if the secret traitor was actually one of the traitors we already knew about?? maybe that’s why Hugo is acting so opposed to it?? #TheTraitors,’ suggested bessie_dx.

‘Can the secret Traitor be one of the Traitors themselves? #TheTraitors #TraitorsUK,’ neekonline said.

‘What if the secret traitor….. is one of the current traitors? #TheTraitors #TheTraitorsUK,’ said BarryStGermain1.

‘Theory that the secret traitor is one of the 3 normal traitors #TheTraitors #doublebluff,’ said liamadamsiii.

The theory has gained a little traction online, with fans holding their breath to see which other twists are in store as the series continues.

In a twist towards the end of the episode, remaining traitors Rachel and Stephen were tasked with their first in-plain-sight murder.

The duo used red paint to mark nine people on the family tree in the foyer. The marked would then make up the shortlist for the murder that evening.

The pressure of the task proved a lot for the pair and, at one point, they found themselves in front of the family tree with fellow contestant Reece.

Fans have suggested that this could have been a fatal error and Reece is sure to mention that he left the pair having a private conversation in front of the tree, which would look a lot like plotting for their upcoming crime.

Fans will have to wait until Wednesday to see the red-cloaked Secret Traitor unveiled, and see if Reece has rumbled Rachel and Stephen.

Of course, if Reece is in fact the Secret Traitor, this could explain why he was quick to give the duo some private time, as he’d know exactly who the traitors are, and that they’d likely need to have a private chat to plot…
