Poor Debbie Webster’s (Sue Devaney) got a lot on her plate in Coronation Street this year, and I’m not just talking about turkey and stuffing.

Planning her dream fairytale wedding is enough of a stress – even if her wedding planner is Emmerdale’s own Belle Dingle (Eden Taylor-Draper).

Not only is she battling with young-onset dementia, but she’s got to deal with her warring brothers Kevin (Michael De Vell) and Carl Webster (Jonathan Howard), the latter of which has more secrets than you can shake a stick at.

Add to that a shocking stunt involving a devastating car-crash, and that’s pure overkill as far as we’re concerned – and we’re here for every minute of it.

In the epic hourlong soap crossover Corriedale, worlds literally collide when the villagers of Emmerdale meet the residents of Coronation Street on a lonely nighttime roadside on a stage set for chaos. Several vehicles are involved in the collision, including a minibus full of Debbie’s wedding guests!

Actress Sue Devaney shares her reaction to finding out Debbie’s involvement in the disaster, saying: ‘I was thrilled. I was so thrilled. I’ll tell you why: because when we’re filming Corrie, we come to work, we come to the studio every day. Corriedale was on location.

‘It was also being with Emmerdale. It was being with a new crew, a director who works between the two. But it was exciting because we were doing night shoots, working with different cameras. We were on location and we were all staying in a hotel. So it was like, “Oh, I’m on my holidays!”

‘It was really good fun and it was exciting because it’s something fun to do. And also with all the stunts. It felt like doing a little movie or something.’

Without giving too many juicy spoilers away, Sue shares that Debbie is at the centre of the stunt, and reveals some of the fun she had on set.

‘I was just getting excited, beside myself. And there was one scene where Carl had to drive off really fast and they had a dummy for me, with the hair and feathers in the hair and everything. And I said to our director, “Can I not speed off with the stunt guy?” And he said, “Yeah, go on then.” He let me do it! Just for the excitement of getting into the car and driving off really fast. Amazing.’

How does the blushing bride to be get tangled up in a roadside wreck? Well, the smart money is on Carl. Most brothers would bring confetti or at least a new toaster to a wedding. Carl on the other hand brings a bomb full of secrets and bad choices just waiting to explode – for example, doing the dirty with James Bailey (Jason Callender) behind Abi’s back, being responsible for the hit and run that put Tyrone Dobbs (Alan Halsall) in a wheelchair, and gaslighting Debbie into believing her dementia was getting worse so she’d give him access to her business bank accounts.

While Debbie’s in the dark regarding the full extent of her half-brother’s utter sleaziness, Kevin has no such illusions. He’s still harbouring a grudge over the teensy little matter of Carl running off with his wife. But under pressure from Debbie, the brothers are reluctantly putting their grudge aside for their sister’s special day.

‘I think that she’s asked Kevin to not fall out and to just be friends, just to get through the day.’ Sue explains. ‘She knows that Carl and Kevin aren’t getting on very well. Abi and Carl have split up, but she can’t keep up with everything because it’s like one minute they’re together, then they’ve split up. And I think there’s going to be a lot of tension around the wedding where Abi is watching out for Carl because she doesn’t trust him. But Carl, in Debbie’s eyes, can’t do anything wrong, because she loves her brother.’

What will it take for Debbie to see Carl’s true colours? An epic car crash stunt, perhaps? Stay tuned…
