Gunmen launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area, Kebbi State, leaving an undisclosed number of people dead and many others injured, local sources reported.
Eyewitnesses said the assailants struck suddenly, opening fire sporadically and causing widespread panic. Many residents fled to neighbouring communities and nearby bushes in search of safety.
According to sources, the exact number of casualties remains unclear due to the scale of the attack and the dispersal of residents across different locations. The community, which has not witnessed such violence in years, is said to be in serious trauma.
Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said officers are on the ground assessing the situation. He added that the police are determining the number of casualties and injuries and will release an official statement soon.
Some community members, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed that security agencies have mobilised to the area.
Residents have called on the government and security agencies to provide urgent assistance, describing the attack as unprecedented in the history of their community.
