Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has expressed sympathy and solidarity with world heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, following a road accident involving the boxer along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway in Ogun State.
Atiku, in a post on his official X account on Monday, said he was saddened by news of the accident and prayed for Joshua’s speedy recovery.
“I am deeply saddened to hear of the road accident involving @anthonyjoshua today in Makun, Ogun State,” Atiku wrote. “I stand in full solidarity with him during this difficult moment and pray for his swift and complete recovery.”
The former vice president also extended condolences to the families of two persons who reportedly lost their lives in the accident.
“My heartfelt condolences go to the families and loved ones of the two individuals who tragically lost their lives in the accident. May their souls rest in peace, and may their families find comfort and strength in this time of sorrow,” he added.
Anthony Joshua was said to have narrowly escaped death in the crash, which occurred at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday near Danco Filling Station in the Makun area of Ogun State, inward the Sagamu Interchange on the Ibadan axis of the expressway.
Eyewitnesses said the boxer was travelling in a Lexus SUV with registration number KRD 850 HN when the vehicle collided with a stationary truck under circumstances that are yet to be fully determined.
The Lexus was reportedly part of a two-vehicle convoy, alongside a Pajero SUV conveying Joshua’s security personnel.
Details of the incident remain sketchy as authorities are yet to release an official statement on the cause of the crash. However, eyewitness accounts indicated that the impact of the collision caused significant damage to the vehicle conveying the boxer.
Joshua, a former two-time unified heavyweight world champion, is widely regarded as one of the most prominent figures in global boxing and a source of national pride to many Nigerians.
As of the time of filing this report, there were no official updates on his medical condition, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident were ongoing.
