Drone allegedly flies package to prisoner at South Australia's largest prison

A drone has allegedly flown a package to an inmate in a major security breach at South Australia's largest prison.

Sources told 9News the unmanned device entered the airspace of Adelaide's Yatala Prison about 8pm yesterday.

It hovered outside the third storey of the B division when an inmate appeared to reach out of a barred window to retrieve a delivery.

Today, the SA Department for Correctional Services confirmed there was a breach and an attempt to introduce contraband to the prison.

Staff responded quickly and were able to secure evidence, the department said.

The incident was reported to the police.

9News was told officers uncovered a concealed mobile phone, with a battery and charger, in an inmate's cell.

They also seized a glass pipe and illegal drugs during the search.

The inmate at the centre of the incident is believed to have been moved to the ultra-secure G division.

Police are investigating how the drone flew into prison airspace and who was flying it. `
