'Driving me mad': Man claims recycling bin not emptied for months

A Brisbane resident claims his yellow recycling bin was not collected for 14 weeks.

The man from Acacia Ridge in the city's south said his bin was left overflowing with rubbish.

"Look, it's unbelievable," he told Nine radio station 4BC.

A Brisbane resident has claimed his yellow recycling bin was not collected for 14 weeks until his local representative intervened.

"I live on a corner and I watch the truck, the truck comes up our road and he collects the even numbers, then he backs out of our street and continues.

"This has been going on for 14 weeks."

An email seen by 4BC said the bins were not collected due to issues with access in the street, however the resident disputed this.

"It shouldn't be a problem, it's quite a wide road, it's not a narrow little cul-de-sac," he said.

"We've got no problems with the red bin, we've got no problems with the green bin, it's the only the yellow.

"They've got no problems driving up there and turning around at the top of our street, no problems at all.

"It's driving me mad, it's unbelievable, if you lived there you'd scratch your head and say 'what in the hell is going on?'

"On the 24th of December is the first time we've had a proper collection."

The local says he called Brisbane City Council to complain each time the fortnightly collection was missed.

He says nothing was done until his local MP intervened.

Brisbane City Council said its rubbish trucks do an "incredible job navigating busy Brisbane streets to collect our rubbish".

"Brisbane has the biggest waste collection service in Australia with more than 43 million bins collected every year, or around 170,000 every day," a spokesperson said.

"While street access and parked cars can make it difficult for our trucks, around 99.9 per cent of bins are collected on time.

"If a bin is missed, it's usually collected within 24 hours.

"Unfortunately, ongoing access issues for our drivers caused missed recycling collections for residents in this street and we sincerely apologise for the inconvenience.

"This issue was escalated to our contractor's management team and the latest scheduled recycling collection on Christmas Eve occurred successfully."

9News.com.au has contacted waste management service Veolia for comment.

A 9News report revealed in the first five months of 2025 the council was contacted 12,000 times about missed bin collections in Brisbane.

"People go to work, work hard so they can pay their rates, they don't want to come home and have to report to council in some cases half a dozen times before their bins will actually get collected," council opposition leader Jared Cassidy said.

"Councils need to get three basic things right - roads, rates and rubbish."
