Rob Reiner and Michele Singer Reiner reportedly died just minutes after sustaining ‘multiple sharp force injuries’ from a knife.

The filmmaker, 78, and his wife, 70, were found dead in their Los Angeles home on December 14.

The couple’s 32-year-old son Nick – who had battled addiction and was reportedly being treated for schizophrenia – has been charged with their murders.

Their cause of death was revealed last week as the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner revealed they died from ‘multiple sharp force injuries’.

The online records show the Hollywood couple died on Sunday, the same day they were found at their Brentwood home by their daughter Romy Reiner. Their deaths have both been ruled homicides, with the place of death listed as their residence.

However, now People has revealed additional details about their murder, revealing their deaths were caused ‘with [a] knife, by another.’

The time between the onset of injuries and death is also listed as ‘minutes.’

The death certificates indicate that Robert was found first, at around 3:45pm.

His wife, Michele, who is listed as ‘widowed,’ was discovered just a minute later at 3:46pm.

The death certificates also revealed that the couple had been cremated.

The couple’s children revealed funeral plans earlier this week.

A statement from the siblings’ spokesperson read: ‘Jake and Romy Reiner remain grateful for the outpouring of love and support they have received.

‘They will share information about a memorial service honouring their parents at a later date.’

Romy and Jake previously remembered the Princess Bride filmmaker and his wife as their ‘best friends’.

They said in a statement last week: ‘Words cannot even begin to describe the unimaginable pain we are experiencing every moment of the day.

‘The horrific and devastating loss of our parents, Rob and Michele Reiner, is something that no one should ever experience.

‘They weren’t just our parents; they were our best friends.’

Their statement was released as their brother made his first court appearance last Wednesday, December 17, after being charged with two counts of first-degree murder.

Nick’s arraignment has now been scheduled for January 7, 2026.

Michele and Rob met on the set of When Harry Met Sally and got married in 1989, the same year the acclaimed romantic comedy was released, and went on to have children, Jake, Nick, and Romy, together.

Rob is also survived by his adoptive daughter, Tracy Reiner, from his previous relationship with Penny Marshall.
