Laura Sullivan has been living inside a Disney Pixar fever dream for most of her life. The 36-year-old pharmacist from Tucson, Arizona, has been avidly collecting Monsters, Inc. memorabilia since the first film landed in cinemas back in 2001. What started off as something of a childhood pastime has slowly taken over her life and home. Room by room. Today, almost every single space in her house is themed around the franchise, from furniture to colour schemes to decoration. Only the master bedroom has escaped the makeover, standing as the sole non-monster zone in her unusual abode. (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
Her love for the film runs deep and comes with a personal twist. Laura legally changed her surname to Sullivan, after Sulley, the furry blue lead character whose full name is James P. Sullivan. It is not a phase, either. It’s a real reflection of how closely the animated film franchise has been woven into her life. She can’t put an exact figure on what she has spent over the years, but she estimates the total comfortably sits in the tens of thousands of dollars. There’s even signs of her obsession in her kitchen, featuring what we hope she refers to as her ‘Monster’s Sink’. (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
The biggest splurges are fairly hard to miss. Life-size models of Mike and Sulley dominate the space, each costing $7.5k (£6,532). They are joined by a green sofa, themed bed sets, painted doors and shelves stacked with memorabilia. Laura says: ‘I’ve loved Monsters, Inc. ever since the movie first came out. I love the characters, the storyline, the fun colours. Basically anything and everything you can think of relating to Monsters Inc I enjoy.’ (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
The collection has its roots in her childhood. Laura’s mother worked at the Disney Store and regularly brought home merchandise for her and her brother. When Monsters, Inc. was released, Boo plushies and themed items started appearing at home. Laura said: ‘After my brother grew out of it, I took all of his Monsters, Inc. merch and never stopped collecting.’ What filled one room in an earlier home now spills across almost an entire house. ‘I also have ADHD, so this probably started out as a hyperfixation,’ she said. That fixation became a long-term project rather than a passing interest. Over 24 years, she has slowly upgraded pieces, hunted for rare items and leaned into the aesthetic. Light blue, green and purple dominate the walls, cookware and furniture, turning daily life into a full-time theme. (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
The transformation accelerated after her divorce three years ago. With a new chapter came a decision to fully commit. The living room, dining room, kitchen, guest room, guest bathroom, hallway and office are all now Monsters, Inc. themed. Laura said: ‘Before that marriage ended, I would dream about what my own place would look like with everything being themed to Monsters, Inc. All the cookware, walls and furniture being fun shades of light blue, green and purple’. (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
Laura said: ‘It was a dream that I made reality.’ She added: ‘When I got remarried, my wonderfully supportive wife took my last name so we are the Sullivans.’ The surname change, first made after her divorce in 2023, is now a shared badge of honour rather than a solo statement of fandom. Despite the money already spent, Laura has no plans to stop. ‘I do try hard to find savings where I can though but I have been collecting since 2001 so in 24 years it’s tens of thousands of dollars,’ she said. Her ambition goes beyond decoration. ‘I will never stop adding to the collection. I have turned this into my whole personality.’ She hopes it may one day earn her a Guinness World Records title. Although how it hasn’t already is anyone’s guess… Is there someone out there with a bigger Monsters Inc. collection? Surely not. (Picture: Laura Sullivan/SWNS)
