Lying to your fiancé can be a risky business – especially if his mum’s got blood on her hands.
But that’s just what Eva Price (Catherine Tyldesley) does in upcoming episodes which reveal that this Coronation Street Queen is sitting on a bombshell that could explode her relationship with Ben (Aaron McCusker). However, that might be the least of her worries if monster-in-law Maggie (Pauline McLynn) finds out.
Ever since her triumphant return to Weatherfield as the Rovers’ New Landlady, Eva’s dreams of a simple, happy life with Ben Driscoll and family have been thwarted at every turn by meddling mother-in-law and co-landlady Maggie.
With the cold steely gaze of Bet Lynch and the caustic barbs of Blanch Hunt, Maggie’s more than a match for Eva and has made her disdain for her son’s choice in women painfully clear.
However, Maggie Driscoll is not your average in-law. Coronation Street has already given us a glimpse into her past, in a special episode revealing how she’s prepared to go to lethal lengths to protect her family.
But whilst Maggie might roll her eyes at Eva’s cocktail evenings, she’s never had a real reason to sharpen her knitting needles in her daughter-in-law’s direction… until now.
When Susie (Aurora Bradshaw) hopes for a baby brother or sister, Ben likes the idea but Eva’s clearly rattled.
Meanwhile, Maggie’s intrigued when Carl (Jonathan Howard) reveals that Eva’s credit card was found in one of the bedrooms in the Chariot Hotel.
Putting her detective hat on, she confronts Ben, who explains that Will had taken his girlfriend there and used Eva’s card to pay. Is this enough to shut down Maggie’s suspicions?
But there’s more to this story than meets the eye when Adam (Sam Robertson) finds a tearful Eva in the backyard, and she ends up crying on his shoulder. Confiding, Eva hates herself for lying to Ben, but Adam assures her she had no choice. What is Eva hiding?
Encouraged by Adam’s advice, Eva writes down her feelings about her mysterious secret in the form of a letter. When Alya (Sair Khan) enters, Adam shoves a jewellery box at Eva and asks her to hide it because it’s Alya’s present. As Eva hides the box, Maggie watches with interest…
…and as soon as the coast is clear, she rifles through Eva’s handbag, hoping that there’s something incriminating inside that box. But it’s just a necklace engraved for Alya.

Disappointed, Maggie puts the box back… only to stumble upon Eva’s letter. Maggie’s shocked. What has she found?
Whatever the tea, a conniving Maggie’s about to spill it when she insists that Adam and Alya join the Driscolls for Christmas dinner.
But all Maggie wants to Christmas is to crush Eva, and when the time comes for Secret Santa, Maggie hands out the gifts… and when Ben unwraps his present, he’s floored by what he receives.
What is Eva’s secret… and will it destroy her relationship with Ben for good?
