Lily Allen has opened up on her daughter’s relationship with David Harbour, confirming they are still in contact.
The West End Girl singer, 40, split from the Stranger Things actor last year, and she hasn’t intervened in the close relationship he still has with her daughters Ethel, 14, and 12-year-old Marnie, who she has with first husband Sam Cooper.
Her remarks come after the actor was spotted on a day out with the children at Universal Epic Universe theme park just days after the release of her scathing album.
She told The Observer: ‘I stay out of it.
‘They’ve both got phones. They all text each other.’
Lily – whose new album hints that David was unfaithful to her – admitted her experiences in her second marriage has given her a better understanding of the ‘pain’ Sam felt in their relationship.
She said: ‘[I’ve learned there are no] baddies and goodies in a marriage but, having done things that were not very nice in my first marriage, I have a better idea now of the pain I may have inflicted.
‘I’ve learned how horrible it is to be on the receiving end of that.’
Would Lily Allen get married again?
Despite her short-lived unions, the Smile singer hasn’t ruled out tying the knot again in the future.
She said: ‘I’d like to say I’d never do it again, but I do like it. Everything but the institution of it, you know? I like being chosen. I like jewellery. I like getting dressed up. I like celebrating. I don’t like talking about money. I like my independence. But I don’t like divorce.’
Lily has found getting divorced ‘devastating’ and has left her struggling to trust other people.
She said: ‘It’s just sort of devastating, really. It keeps you up at night and costs a huge amount of money and just goes on and on and on. And I hate feeling like I can’t trust anyone. But there’s something about dealing with an ex-partner and lawyers that creates an environment of feeling like you can’t trust anybody or anything.’
What did Lily Allen appear to say about David Harbour in West End Girl?
In West End Girl, Lily appeared to reveal that they were in some version of an open relationship, but accused David of breaking the rules by cheating on her.
‘We had an arrangement/ Be discreet and don’t be blatant/ It had to be with strangers,’ she sings, before describing her discovery of a woman who she refers to as Madeline.
While Lily previously said she’d like to have children with David, in the album – which was met with rave reviews – the star sings about her husband considering getting a vasectomy, as she wonders whether he’d got a woman pregnant that’s not her.
She also sings in Pussy Palace that she ‘found a shoebox full of handwritten letters /From brokenhearted women wishing you could have been better’ in an apartment owned by David in New York, which she said was evidence of his ‘double life’.
Lily also sings about finding a bag full of ’sex toys, butt plugs, and lube inside’.
In the titular track, Lily described David’s ‘demeanour’ changing after she got a part in West End play, 2:22 A Ghost Story.
The Not Fair singer believes she has become a ‘different person’ in the years since she first found fame.
She said: ‘We’re all massive walking contradictions, right? That’s what makes us human beings. You can think one thing one day, and then you grow, and you think something else – that’s life.
‘’I’m a different person than I was 20 years ago because I’ve lived 20 years of my life and I’ve had two children and two marriages and I’ve learned a lot.’
David and Lily met on the dating app Raya before marrying in Las Vegas in 2020.
After months of speculation, in February this year, Lily and David confirmed that they were divorcing.
David has not publicly commented on the accusations that he was unfaithful to Lily during their marriage.
