Oman observes winter solstice marking shortest day of the year

Muscat – Oman will witness the phenomenon of the winter solstice on Sunday, December 21, 2025, officially marking the start of the astronomical winter in the Northern Hemisphere.

According to the Oman Astronomy and Space Association, the event will occur at 7:03 pm local time, resulting in the shortest day and longest night of the calendar year. In Muscat, the sun is expected to rise at 6:44 am and set at 5:25 pm, providing a daylight duration of approximately 10 hours and 41 minutes.

Astronomers clarify that this seasonal transition is caused by the 23.5-degree tilt of the Earth’s axis rather than its distance from the sun. This winter season is projected to last for 88 days and 23 hours, continuing until the vernal equinox in March 2026.
