Donald Trump is full of surprises. You never know what he’s going to do or say.

And his latest announcement has caused quite the stir.

The US President said yesterday that he has decided to launch the ‘Patriot Games’ – a sport contest that will be a part of America’s 250th anniversary celebrations in 2026.

He called it ‘an unprecedented four-day athletic event featuring the greatest high school athletes – one young man and one young woman from each state and territory’.

Trump said: ‘I pledged to give America the most spectacular birthday party the world has ever seen for America’s 250th anniversary on July 4th next year.’

‘Already, we’ve had big celebrations to commemorate the 250th birthdays of the Army, the Navy, and the United States Marines, but there is much, much more to come. We’re going to have a good time.’

This has led many to draw comparisons with the dystopian sci-fi series of books and films, The Hunger Games.

Quoting the film, the Democrats’ official X account wrote: ‘And so it was decreed that, each year, the various districts of Panem would offer up, in tribute, one young man and woman to fight to the death in a pageant of honor, courage and sacrifice.’

And many social media users have had the same reaction.

One person wrote on X: ‘One man and one woman from each district. The Hunger Games 2025 is about to be lit.’

Another joked: ‘If a girl volunteers for her little sister, make sure to accept it.’

A third said: ‘Wait wait… did this dude just announce The Hunger Games?’

Meanwhile, a fourth user wrote: ‘Oh crazy, like imagine if we did it for the entire world!

‘Like every set amount of years we have the best from each country all compete to crown the best of the best!

‘And each country would come together to root for their countrymen! Would be pretty dope!’

However, not everyone had the same reaction, as some were quick to suggest it was a poor joke.

Responding to the Democrats’ post, one person said: ‘Do you people only read the Hunger Games and Handmaid’s Tale?

‘Is that why your imagination is a shrunken appendage that evolution will someday have to explain away as vestigial?’

Another user wrote: ‘First it was The Handmaids Tale, now it’s The Hunger Games. Just stop reading fiction and pretending it’s real.’

A third said: ‘The Hunger Games is when you… encourage athleticism?

‘Trump’s definitely not the best messenger for this sure, but JFK too encouraged the athleticism of American youth. This fear mongering is silly.’

And a fourth remarked: ‘There’s quite a difference between a voluntary Olympics style sports competition celebrating athletic excellence for a nation’s 250 year birthday… and one where tributes are selected in a forced lottery, ripped from their homes at the barrel of a gun and forced to fight to the death for “elite” society’s pleasure.’

Trump’s critics have previously made comparisons between perceived threats to women’s rights in the US and the dystopian novel and TV series The Handmade’s Tale, which tells a story of how fertile women are forced into sexual servitude to bear children for the ruling elite.
