Man charged over alleged antisemitic threats on flight from Bali to Sydney

A Sydney man has been charged with allegedly threatening violence towards a member of the Jewish community on a flight from Bali to Sydney yesterday.

The 19-year-old man, from Condell Park, is accused of making antisemitic hand gestures and threats towards the alleged victim, who police say he knew to be affiliated with the Jewish community.

The Australian Federal Police (AFP) said it received a request for assistance from the airline yesterday.

He was arrested on the flight's arrival into Sydney International Airport and charged with one count of threatening force or violence against members of groups or close associates.

The offence carries a maximum penalty of five years' imprisonment.

The 19-year-old will face court today and the AFP reminded the community that there is no current or impending threat to the community.

Police did not specify if the alleged threat was related to Sunday's terror attack at Bondi, in which 15 people died as two gunmen opened fire on the Chanukkah By The Sea event.

More to come.
