Cheesecake lovers are in for a treat, thanks to a new snack that’s hit the supermarket shelves.
Morrisons has launched a brand new fruity product that shoppers are going wild over, as they say it tastes just like cheesecake.
The item in question is The Best Limited-Edition Cheesecake Blackcurrants – but surprisingly enough, it doesn’t actually contain any cheesecake.
Instead, freeze-dried blackcurrants are coated in Belgian white chocolate with a blackcurrant yoghurt flavouring.
The snack is £3.75 for a 150g pack, and they’re proving popular with customers who have hailed them ‘addictive’ and ‘delicious’.
On the Morrisons website, a shopper known only as Scarlett shared a review, giving them five stars, saying: ‘Oh my! For a start, these little balls of loveliness look delicious. And let me tell you, they are delicious!
‘They look beautiful, all deep purple and marbled, and the taste – my eyes rolled to the back of my head when I bit into one of them.’
Similarly, on Instagram, @superbritishgirl said: ‘These are addictive. Visually looking like aniseed balls, they are freeze-dried blackcurrants, a rarity coated in Belgian white chocolate, although ingredients has yoghurt powder.
‘Anyway, if you like yoghurt-coated snacks, these are delicious because the crunchy blackcurrants are sharp with a Malteser texture. Then you have a tangy and sweet coating of white chocolate with yoghurt powder. The blackcurrant seeds are a little annoying but forgivable.’
And @eatswithalia on TikTok shared: ‘Morrisons, I don’t know what you put in here, but these are blackcurrants that taste like cheesecake. I’ve demolished half [the packet] already.
‘It actually tastes like a cheesecake, I can’t even explain it. That is so good. 20 out of 10.’
However, a closer look at the ingredients list reveals that the snack won’t be for everyone.
This is because the product contains shellac, a form of confectioner’s glaze, which isn’t suitable for vegetarians or vegans.
Not to be confused with the Shellac nail brand, this glaze is made from resin secreted from female lac bugs.
It’s often mixed with ethanol to create a shiny and smooth glaze for food, and then added to candy, chocolate and other sweet treats.
In 2022, the Vegetarian Society of the UK announced it would be removing shellac from the list of ingredients with its vegetarian trademark.
They don’t allow any product that ‘contains, consists of, or has been produced with the aid of products consisting of or created from, any part of the body of a living or dead animal’.
Do they really taste like cheesecake?
I gave the new snack a try to see if it lives up to all the hype, and I can confirm the blackcurrants do indeed taste like cheesecake.
However, if you like more of a savoury tasting cheesecake, these probably won’t be for you.
The little balls are incredibly sweet thanks to the white chocolate coating, and the flavour lingers in the mouth long after you’ve eaten them, which becomes unpleasant and artificial tasting after a while.
I have a massive sweet tooth, but I found myself only able to manage a few of these before finding them too much.

In other food news, Cadbury has confirmed that a major change is being made to tubs of Roses ahead of Christmas.
The chocolate giant has ‘refreshed’ the packaging for the sweets as well as the wrappers. As such, you might notice the new tubs now come in a darker shade of blue, which is closer to purple – like the Cadbury logo.
In addition to this, the individual sweet wrappers now boldly proclaim in large letters what kind of chocolate is inside – just in case you hadn’t worked out what’s in the mix yet.
A spokesperson for Mondelēz International, which owns Cadbury, said: ‘Launched in 1938, Roses is a much-loved Cadbury heritage brand, and has been a fan-favourite for gifting and showing appreciation to loved ones for over 85 years.
‘This year, we have refreshed our packaging to make our products feel even more gift-worthy, highlighting the beauty of our heritage Rose symbol while evolving to keep up with changing consumer tastes.
‘We’ll be rolling out changes across our outer packaging and inside wrappers, and consumers can expect to see these changes across stores nationwide.’The ‘world’s best fries’ have also finally made their way from the Netherlands to London, and Five Guys has added a new item to the menu for the first time in 12 years.
