Grammy nominee Carl Carlton has died at the age of 73, his son has confirmed on social media.
Carlton was a soul legend best known for his tracks Everlasting Love and She’s a Bad Mama Jama.
His death was announced by his son, Carlton Hudgens II, on Facebook this Sunday.
He posted a photo of his Dad, alongside the caption: ‘RIP Dad, Legend Carl Carlton singer of She’s a Bad Mama Jama.
‘Long hard fight in life and you will be missed.’
Carlton suffered a stroke in 2019 according to Soul Tracks.
A cause of death hasn’t been publicly announced.
Hudgens II posted on his Facebook story: ‘R.I.P. Dad, You can finally rest now. Always love you’.
His son also urged the internet to ‘fix [his] Dad’s birthday’. He says May 21 1952 is correct, and not 1953.
The singer was born in Detroit in 1952 and began his music career in the 1960s.
Originally, he performed by the name Little Carl Carlton, but became Carl Carlton in 1971.
By 1964 he had released I Think of How I Love Her and I Love True Love, which were his first singles for Lando records.
He hit the top 10 in 1974 with a cover of Everlasting Love.
But his hit song, She’s a Bad Mama Jama, released in 1981, was what he became best known for.
It was nominated for a Grammy and continues to be streamed widely.
More to come.
