Director Casey Hudson has refuted claims his spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic will not launch before 2030.
Aside from two new Tomb Raider games, one of the biggest reveals at The Game Awards 2025 was Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic.
The upcoming role-player is in development at new Canadian developer Arcanaut Studios, which was co-founded in July this year by Mass Effect director Casey Hudson. The game is pitched as a spiritual successor to Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, which Hudson also directed.
The reveal trailer gave no indication of a release date, but based on the studio’s recent formation, Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier suggested a launch in 2030 would be an ‘optimistic guess’ on Bluesky – something which was taken as a direct rumour elsewhere, rather than the innocent speculation it actually was.
This ‘rumour’ made its way to Hudson, who downplayed the potential five year wait on X. ‘Don’t worry about the ‘not till 2030′ rumours,’ Hudson wrote. ‘Game will be out before then. I’m not getting any younger!’
Hudson doesn’t provide any window for when the game could launch, but based on the studio’s wording so far, it certainly sounds like it will be several years.
‘We’re still early in development, with many challenges ahead,’ Hudson said in a post about the game on the Star Wars website. ‘I’m grateful to have enjoyed the support of Knights Of The Old Republic fans for many years, and I look forward to embarking upon this journey together, sharing more of what we’re doing as soon as we can!’

Little is known about Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic, aside from it telling a brand new story in the Star Wars universe about a ‘Force user on a journey through a galaxy on the edge of rebirth at the end of the Old Republic’ era.
At a time when we’re still waiting for The Elder Scrolls 6 and The Witcher 4 many years after they were first announced, it’s certainly likely Star Wars: Fate Of The Old Republic will follow the same trajectory, so we’d bank on 2028 at the earliest based on Hudson’s comments.
One potential stop-gap before Fate Of The Old Republic could be the remake of Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic, but nothing has been seen from that project since it was announced in 2021.
There was concern the project had been cancelled, as development shifted from Aspyr to Saber Interactive, who split from Embracer in 2024, but Saber’s chief creative officer Tim Willits did reaffirm ‘everything that we have talked about is still in development’ earlier this year on X, which presumably includes the remake.
Whether the Knights Of The Old Republic remake eventually makes it out of the door remains to be seen, but there are plenty of other Star Wars games on the horizon.
The sequel to Star Wars Jedi: Survivor is in development, along with Star Wars: Galactic Racer, the narrative-driven Star Wars: Eclipse, and strategy title Star Wars Zero Company.
