Newcastle captain Bruno Guimaraes was raging after the 1-0 defeat at Sunderland on Sunday, slamming his team’s performance in an ’embarrassing’ loss.

It was the first Premier League Tyne-Wear derby since 2016 and the atmosphere was seriously rowdy at the Stadium of Light.

The home fans left happy as Nick Woltemade’s own goal proved the difference between the Magpies and the Black Cats.

Eddie Howe’s team has been really inconsistent in the Premier League so far this campaign, winning just six of their 16 outings and sitting 12th in the table.

Their latest underwhelming display left their skipper extremely angry and he did not hold back in his post-match assessment.

‘The whole message in the changing room today was do it for the fans and we didn’t,’ said the Brazilian midfielder on Sky Sports.

‘It’s so embarrassing for me and frustrating because we know we have a better team than them. It’s clear for me. But we didn’t perform like a better team today. It makes me feel angry.

‘I have to be very worried about my words because I’m very angry with the performance.’

The 28-year-old continued, when asked if it was the most painful loss of his Newcastle career: ‘Not just as a defeat, more the way we play.

‘Disappointed, frustrated, lack of energy, don’t put the things that we are able to do, cross the ball, pass the ball.

‘We were like a mess in my point of view. Disappointed, angry. This one is a tough one to accept.

‘We should play much better. I don’t want to talk about the opposite team. It’s about us, it’s about the way we play.

‘We were not there. No passing, no crossing, nothing. No competing, no showing desire.

‘We know how big the game is and we didn’t perform the way we should, so I’m very angry.’

Magpies boss Howe said: ‘It’s a horrible feeling, it’s very painful

‘It was not our finest game. It’s so disappointing, we know our performance was not what it needed to be. But no, I don’t think it will define our season. Nothing is lost today, it was a game of very few chances settled by a freak goal and we couldn’t create the openings we wanted.

‘The effort was there but the quality wasn’t. We were disappointed with our creative output. We haven’t delivered. It’s difficult to take.’
