Retail sales rise but ONS apologises as statistics crisis deepens

July data late, with UK statistics body admitting to errors in way it produces seasonally adjusted sales figures

Sunny weather and the Euro 2025 women’s football tournament helped boost retail sales in July, according to delayed official figures that have been blighted by errors.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) apologised for the errors and delay in releasing the retail sales figures for Great Britain, two weeks later than originally planned.
