A 25-year-old Troy man was shot in the parking garage at a Troy hospital, prompting a massive police presence and a search for the suspect.
At about 9:45 a.m., Troy police announced the suspect was in custody. Macomb County SWAT team was activated to arrest the suspect in Macomb Township, near 21 Mile and Heydenreich roads. Dakota High School was on lock down but it has since been lifted.
“All clear at Corewell Troy,” police posted. “Suspect is in custody. Corewell Troy is in the process of returning back to normal operations.”
An active shooter alert was reported at the Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Troy, at 7:08 a.m. and police issued a warning for motorists and pedestrians to avoid the area and shelter in place.
The suspect fired five shots from a handgun at the man, striking him twice in the arm, Troy police Lt. Ben Hancock told The Detroit News, calling the shooting as “a targeted incident between two employees of the hospital.”
It’s unclear what types of jobs the two man have.
While police were still clearing out the hospital, the official said they were “confident” the suspect had left the complex.
The victim was in condition, Hancock said.
The emergency alert was sent out just before 7:30 a.m. Thursday to mobile phones in the immediate area.
All roads in the area were being blocked.
There was a major police presence on the scene including officers from Sterling Heights, Shelby Township, Auburn Hills, Southfield, Troy and both the Macomb and Oakland counties sheriff’s offices and some federal agencies including the ATF, responded to the shooting. The search for the suspect included canines, drones and helicopters throughout the area, Hancock said.
A driver in the area said police officers have been coming and going in all directions. Nearby schools and security have been notified of the situation.
“We can confirm there has been a shooting at Corewell Health Beaumont Troy Hospital,” Troy police posted on Facebook. “This appears to be an isolated incident however the Suspect is not in custody. Please avoid the area.”
Corewell released a statement to The Oakland Press:
“We are working with local law enforcement. Out of an abundance of caution, the hospital is on lockdown. One victim is in the emergency department for medical treatment. Patients with services scheduled should not come to the hospital at this time. Patients may call the department where they were scheduled for service directly. No other information is available at this time.”
