Did you know that in just 25 years’ time, Koalas could be locally extinct in NSW? Did you know that in just 25 years’ time, Koalas could be locally extinct in NSW?Koala populations in Australia were already considered at risk of extinction long before the Black Summer bushfires. The impact of human activities, disease and predation from non-native species have meant that we’ve been seeing a decline in Koala numbers for many years.
But the 2019-2020 bushfires caused further devastation. 60,000 Koalas were killed, injured or displaced in this short amount of time. You were there for them then, and you can be there for them now.
Taronga has an ambitious 5-year plan to save the Koala. And we need your help to do it.

Using high-tech drones equipped with thermal imaging, conservation teams will be able to find Koalas in the wild and gather valuable data. From each study, we have to know – why have they chosen this habitat over another? What areas are they thriving in? We need to know their movement as well to see any spots where the Koala could be vulnerable.
The information gained from undergoing surveys like this will give researchers better understanding about the Koala and its movements. Once we have learned about these populations, we will be able to work with partners to implement conservation actions, such as improving habitat and removing threats.
And the research doesn’t stop there – these Koala communities will continue to be repeatedly monitored over a few years. Research teams will revisit these communities to determine how they’re going and how are the numbers fluctuating with time.
